Looks like I may be driving about 25 miles each way during residency. Is there ANYTHING available regarding pathology that's worth listening to on the drive to and from work??? Seems like a decent use of time if I can learn something and cut into "at-home" study time. Please let me know, current residents.

Thanks.

There's a number of us preparing for boards in May / June, so I'm sure the Osler CD's are pretty popular listening material. The lectures have been recorded in MP3 format, so you can listen to them in your car provided it play that format. In case you don't know, the Osler Institute holds review courses for many of the medical boards.

If you're just starting residency, there are also study materials for USMLE / COMLEX that you can listen to.

Our program subscribes to the QuickScan reviews, and I really like having it as a resource.

Osler is probably the best-known most popular lecture/review series. I get the most yield out of it with accompanying text though.

awesome. thanks guys.

whats your opinion on listening to osler review as a first yr?

also, what does your particular program to as far as helping pay for these educational materials?

My residency gave us $500 / year as book money. You had to provide receipts to be reimbursed. These funds could be used to pay for Osler, books, conferences, etc. Obviously, it isn't enough to cover Osler.

On a more positive note, it never hurts to ask the PD as a group. You'll have to tout the merits of attending. Some programs do pay for their residents (usually people preparing for boards) to attend Osler.

I'm of the opinion that Osler is about the only unified curriculum currently in existence for anatomical and clinical pathology residency. I don't know if I would necessarily attend the course as a first-year (plus I am a ****ty auditory learner), but if you can get your hands on old notes etc. to read and the recordings to listen to as you are going through your rotations, it helps greatly. That way, you'll have far fewer surprises re: all the things you didn't learn during residency, when you're finally preparing for boards.
