Can anybody tells of specific IM prgrams (outside of the usual suspects: MGH, Hopkins, UCSF, etc) that place a priority on taking residents who are AOA.

I was reading on the website of Oregon Health Sciences University that 75% (!) of a recent PGY-1 class in IM was AOA and found that number pretty suprising. I understand it's a very good program, but don't know if this is typical of " top 50" IM programs. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, 75% seems pretty high. I know a few years back when I was working at UT-Southwestern, which is often regarded as a top ten program, they were boasting that more than half of their residents in a particular class of forty-five were AOA. I was working with an IM doctor that interviewed IM residency applicants and was involved on the resident selection committee.

In last year's graduating class from my medical school (Texas), out of the 25 folks that were AOA, only three of them did IM (UCLA, Mayo, and Baylor Dallas).

Just curious, which medical school in Texas do you go to?

i can tell you this. that i got better interviews for ENT than i did for medicine because i got lucky enough to have really good board scores, but my grades are not AOA quality. my letters of rec were good too, but i didnt get interviews at stanford, ucsf, oregon, mgh, or brighams even though i got the top USMLE score in my class. medicine is much more interested in grades than most other specialties, i think. get good grades first for medicine and then worry about your step exam.
