I am an academic PCP and here are my two cents:
Anesthesia on gross will absolutely crush most IM specialties. If you want the bennies and don’t care to dig deeper do gas
Now saying that. There is actually a lot that goes into total ROI.
When deciding any job, always try to get compensation per hour as a metric compared to gross salary.
For my friends that do anesthesia, they make about 500-600k in my shop, but their schedule is all over the place. The call burden is huge and also a lot of them get pressured to do cases on patients that shouldn’t be getting surgery..
so if you assume a 60 hour week with 10 weeks vacation with a 500k salary the total per hour comp is around $200 -250 (look this a ballpark so don’t hate me if it’s not accurate).
Sounds pretty good right? However that’s not taking into account working late at nights, weekends etc. you have to ask yourself is that worth it
My gig- I only gross about 340ish working my academic pcp job. But I only work 31 hours a week in clinic and I take about 6 weeks vacation. I am also earning around $200 an hour working bankers hours.
So sometimes worth doing a detailed analysis to compare apples to apples
