So match is on Feb 6th ... what happens if god forbid we don't match? Who do we call? The NMS site says this:

Beginning at 12:00 noon ET on this date, students who did not match to a position and programs with positions available may contact each other in order to fill available positions.

Where would they be posting the list of programs? Or should I be calling random programs I am interested in and ask if they are unfilled?

Also would I need some sort of paperwork? A new personal statement? Any thing additional to scramble?

Thank you

Okay so I found a little bit of more info:

Students seeking positions after the Match have three sources of information on programs with available positions, as described below. Institutions are responsible for updating their program information in each of these sources. Students should check these sources often as programs may choose to update their information at any point during the post-Match period.

  1. A List of Programs with Available Positions will be provided via this web site. This List will provide the number of positions available in each program and a direct link to the information for each program in the AOA Opportunities database. DMEs will be able to access an online system to update the information shown on the List of Programs with Available Positions.
  2. Information on all programs is provided on the AOA's Opportunities web site at www.opportunities.osteopathic.org, and can be updated by institutions using the access code for that web site previously sent to all DMEs. If you need assistance accessing the Opportunities web site, contact the AOA Department of Education at [email protected] or 312-202-8289.
  3. Institutions may advertise unfilled postdoctoral training positions on the AOA’s web site at www.osteopathic.org/aoapostmatch free of charge, and students may search that site for advertised positions. Institution participation is encouraged, but not required. If an institution needs assistance posting unfilled positions, contact the AOA Department of Education at [email protected] or 312-202-8289.

So I guess we need to call our school and visit that website

If were one to scramble into an AOA TRI (traditional rotating internship) and then match next year, would they be able to have a shortened residency? I.E TRI, then match say IM, would they need to do the full 3 years of IM? Would this be different matching AOA vs ACGME IM (or whatever program)? Would this TRI be accepted for traditional ACGME intern years before matching into a field that does advanced standing, i.e anesthesia or radiology?

TRI would likely count for an AOA residency. It would not count towards ACGME. You would need to repeat the intern year.

TRI WON'T count for an AOA residency. You'll only get credit for some of the rotations.

This is purely dependant on the programs you apply and match to. If the TRI you scramble into has pre-accreditation status it could count as 1 year for ACGME training, but this doesn't mean it will. As far as AOA goes again it could potentially count as an intern year, but it doesn't mean it will.

Most likely programs will expect you to start from PGY-1 again. Some may be kind enough to give you some rotation credit for the TRI. That said, if you're in that situation, chances are you'll be looking for any solid program whether it extends your training a year or not. There are programs you can specifically apply to for advanced training, but this would severely limit you if you only applied to those programs.

Basically assume you'll have to repeat the year, and if you don't, it'll be a pleasant surprise.
