I always hesitate to start a new thread, but in searching through the forums and the internet at large I have not been able to find much firsthand information on this program. I'm especially curious about the quality of the training, availability of psychotherapy training, and the general atmosphere (are residents and faculty friendly/happy?).

Generally speaking, the osteopathic residencies have fewer faculty members, fewer residents, and are located at community based hospitals. Honestly, I would avoid osteopathic residencies, especially when one is entering a DO-friendly field. Psychiatry is one of those specialties where standard of care is less obvious and management is more of an "art." Hence, training in an environment that gives you experience with many different attending will benefit you greatly. I was fortunate enough to work alongside (and closely at that) with approximately 25 different attendings in various settings. You are able to compare and contrast their approaches and find your own approach.

I have heard that many osteopathic residencies are not as desirable for psych, but I would still like to know if this applies to the Corvallis program in particular. It may well be the case there, but I would not want to completely disregard one of my options without more information. Corvallis is one of only 3 programs in the pacific northwest, and returning to that region of the country is fairly important to me (though obviously not the only thing that is important - quality training is also important).

If it is that important with there being only three programs, as you state, then I'd say it'd be worth rotating there. Honestly, there's one DO program that's been discussed on here and the info about it was scarce despite that. The DO programs tend to be more flexible and I'd imagine you could probably more easily set up a 2-week rotation if you're looking for a quick, easy look.

Heard that it is decent, but relatively new, so I don't have much details unfortunately. Agree that as a DO you should aim for the gold-standard training, which is ACGME at a respectable institution with multiple residents and attendings.

bump want to know any new leads on this program?
