question about the importance of AOA - I'm a Canadian student hoping to apply to EM (both in Canada and the States) and our school doesn't do this type of recognition. is it used as a screen for most programs? Also, how realistic is it to hope for interviews if the dean's letter, personal statement etc isn't into the NRMP until early november,

any advice would be greatly appreciated,
thanks,

AOA is not required, it just looks good if you have it. November is pretty late, most programs have their deadline for applying (complete application) in early Nov if not Nov 1.

I also graduated in Canada, sans AOA. Still got my #1, Allegheny General in Pittsburgh. Some schools weren't so CDN friendly. I got a lot of the "you won't need a visa, will you?" type BS, and the cold shoulder from a lot of piddly programs outside of the northeast that'd never heard of McGill.

Where are you applying/graduating from?

Thanks so much for the advice
I'm from University of Ottawa so if the sans - northeastern crowd hasn't heard of McGill they won't know much about dear Ottawa U

any suggestions on specific programs that you think might be more friendly to us Canadians eh?

cheers,
cb.

I thought we treated you pretty good at Duke...

YES! I was treated well at Duke. I highly recommend the program to anyone. White pants are hot, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 😀

The most Canadian-friendly program has to be Hopkins. Dr. Kelen is from Toronto, and there are like 3 people in the now-senior class with McGill ties.

I can't really say which ones are Canadian-friendly beyond that. I've sent the OP an email with some more information...

White pants are OUT - long gone. A dress code has replaced them. The scuttlebutt is that it cost too much to put 5 pairs of pants on everyone, so, they're vapor. Regardless, EM-1's at Duke are doing CT-surgery, instead of general, because of the stupid politics.

Rob Vissers, the PD at UNC-CH, is from Canada. Toronto? Montreal? Vancouver? Who knows... but it's somewhere cold. 🙂

The white pants are GONE???? They were an institution! So sad. Things have just gone downhill since I left...

He's from Vancouver... There's other famous Canadians in EM, too. I always got asked about Ian Steele, who I really don't know of, and the guys who do all the "Ottawa rules" who the OP probably knows. I'm not the name-dropping type, so I always looked bad at interviews when they asked me about people.

Hell, I had no idea who Dr. Kelen was until 3 weeks after he introduced himself at Hopkins. 😳

For some reason our program is laden with Canucks this year, by laden I mean 2 but still.......there are multiple people in our first year class with ties to Canada as well. They all trained in the US but grew up in Canada. this is different than the OP. It was wierd. Never before had Canada had such a showing in our program. Well, as long as they are good residents.
I have some friends who went to McGill undergrad. and a good friend from high school who is there now for the orthopedics residency. Great place with a solid reputation.

PD there no longer I'm afriad.

Huh. Their website still has him listed. That's too bad if he's gone - he's a great guy... probably the main reason I ranked them as highly as I did.

Do you have any idea what he's doing now?

One of our interns rotated there heavily as a student and said he's going somewhere out west. I forget where exactly but I'll ask him next time I see him. I was surprised too.

So, they pulled the plug on pulling the plug on the white pants - they're back, alive and kicking.

Is it too late to transfer in? 😀

Rob Vissers left after 7 years at UNC to become clinical director for a group in Oregon. His family has always wanted to spend some time in the Pacific Northwest.

The new program director at UNC is Doug Trocinski, who had been associate PD at UNC foor te past few years. He's Peds EM trained and offers a different perspective from his previous experience in community EM and in the Navy. He's a great guy and we're very excited about the coming year.
