Also, one last question (for now)... How much of a factor does being an AOA member play when applying? If you're not, is it a big negative and likewise, is being AOA seen as a big plus?

I don't think this field is nearly competitive enough for not having AOA to be a big negative.

Last year only 7.5% of US applicants were in AOA.

I always think this is sort of a ridiculous question. Like, "does research help." Or, "Would being a convicted rapist look bad."

First of all, you have virtually zero control over whether you get AOA or not, so, if you asked my advice, I'd tell you to stop worrying about it.

Second, it's a marker of doing well at pretty much everything, so of course it will make you stand out, and of course it's better to have it than not to have it.
