I had my AMCAS verified August 12, and I was really excited that everything went through. However, when I went to look at my application, I found that AMCAS verified it kind of oddly. Next to the AP exam I took, it just wrote "Exempt" (ie AP Chemistry Exam "Exempt") and then lumped all the credits I got from the various exams together at the very bottom (AP Credits Applicable 28) instead of listing the credits next to the exam. On my official transcript, the specific credits earned ARE listed next to the exam, but I must have made a mistake or they changed it.

Now, this wouldn't be a big issue, except I'm using the credits earned from my AP Chemistry exam to fulfill some general chemistry requirements. I have taken orgo, biochem, and 5 credits of general chemistry, but since most schools require a year (8 credits), I need 3 credits from my AP exam.

I tried submitting an academic change request, but it was denied. I called the various schools, but many of them had no idea what I was talking about, which is just making me more worried and frustrated. When I asked if I could submit an official transcript to them to show the credits I've earned, they said they don't look at those, only at what AMCAS gives them. I tried calling my schools premed office, and they said there is nothing they can do, since their committee letter has already been submitted.

What should I do now? How do I go about showing the credits I've earned for chemistry? I would hate to get rejected just because of a mistake I made. Thank you!

Before you go through all this work, are you sure all of the schools to which you are applying accept AP credits to satisfy pre-reqs? (Many do not).

Yes, the schools I'm applying to do. I also contacted AMCAS and found out what the problem was. On my official transcript, my school lists all of the AP credits that I earned, and then below that, they list the amount that is applicable towards my degree. Unfortunately, since I took a lot of AP exams, not all of them were applicable towards my degree, although they were accepted. Therefore, since the two numbers don't match up, they just put everything as one lumped number at the bottom. I called my school to see if there is anything they can do about it, and there isn't. Our official transcript only lists ALL the AP credits earned and accepted at my school, and does not say which ones are applicable to the degree and which ones are not.

Ok, so since neither AMCAS nor your home institution will budge I suppose the only alternative is to take gen chem II (or an equivalent) ASAP and update the schools.

Is there no way of submitting a transcript or letter to the medical schools? Because on my official transcript, it does state clearly that I earned six credits for AP Chemistry. It also says so on our school's website what courses we get credit for. I am planning on taking another general chemistry course, but I'd still like those six credits I earned to count. Thanks!

I would normally say yes, but did you not already try that?

Yes, but I think part of the problem was because they didn't really understand what I was trying to say. I think they thought I was just trying to submit my grades directly to them instead of through AMCAS.

But if I were to take Gen Chem II, how would I update them? Do I write them a letter and send it to the admissions office?

If this is the case, you may want to contact a few schools again and more articulately ask your question.

Depends on the school. Some will just want an unofficial transcript via their admissions email, others have an update page via their status portal through which you could submit the grade.

Can you please direct me to a list/resources where I can learn more about which medical schools don't accept pre-reqs? I have credit for Math (AP Calc AB), Gen Chem I (Exemption by an exam not AP actually..but still didn't take a class) and Gen Bio (AP Bio)..but I'm of course taking higher level Bio (+8 credit hours)..
