Hi! 🙂 I passed my AP Calc AB and BC exams with a 4 and 5. Because of that, I am exempted from two quarters of single-variable calculus classes at UC Irvine. I know that most medical schools require three quarters/two semesters of calculus/stats with no acceptance of AP credit. My Bio major requires three quarters of math. With my AP scores, I would only need one more quarter of math which I would take Statistics. So, should I follow what most of the med schools require and take 3 quarters of math (this means I would have to take 2 higher multivariable calculus courses and 1 stats course)? Or should I just apply to the very small amount of med schools that accept AP credit (this means I would just need to take one Statistics class)? I figured I would save more time only taking the one Statistics course I need since it fulfills my math GE and also med school pre reqs (although for a small number ofschools). Which is wiser?

Sorry for the long post, but I really need help. I truly appreciate any help I can get from the SDN community. Thank you! 🙂

I wasn't aware that medical schools are opposed AP Statistics credit.

The requirements are pretty straightforward. If a school wants 1 year of math and doesn't accept AP's, then that's what you have to do.

You can take upper level math courses, you could find computational courses in physics and computer science (if they have enough math that you could argue it), you could take stats. At the end of the day, it's your choice. I only took 1 semester of math (statistics) because I had taken math through multivariable in high school (mutivariable at a CC). I didn't apply to schools that didn't take AP/CC credits.

Another option is that you could just apply to all the schools you are interested in and then see where you get an interview/accepted. If it looks like you may attend school X and they require a more math, you can take that course during the Spring or Summer before you matriculate.

I'm in the same situation. I took multivariable and am going to finish with linear algebra and differential equations.

Multivariable calc + stats and you're good to go.
Any further than multivariable calc would be excessive. : (

I just graduated from UCI this past year and had your exact same problem--it also made me really pissed lol. In short I was told by the counselors that I would have to take either Math 2D and 2J or take classes at a CC... I highly recommend the latter as Multi-Variable Calc and Linear Algebra aren't really the bees knees. I ended up taking stats, and I'm planning on signing up for a calc class at a local CC. I know some schools (including some of the the UC's) except ONE of your Calc AP scores to waive one quarter, but other schools may not accept them at all.
Schools don't like people taking classes at CCs, especially Calc classes. : (

I figured as much... I just don't how else I would fulfill a calc requirement at this point... would you recommend doing an extension then? I don't have much free time since I work full time nowadays.

Eh, well. I would email adcoms at every school you're thinking of applying to and see what they think. Every school's different, ya know? And if you already graduated, you have a legitimate excuse to not take it at the 4 year uni.
That's what I did when I found out I had to take an additional english course after receiving AP credit for it.

Mmk. I don't plan on applying till next cycle so I will definitely get on this. I appreciate it!

Also, sorry for partially jacking your thread @boba96. Hopefully you will have gotten some useful advice through my experience! p.s. the $2 boba ain't worth it 😉
