Does anyone know how med schools look at AP credit for prereqs?
I have a full year credit for Chem, Bio, Phsics, and Calc. I will be taking more chem classes and a semester of genetics so this will help. Do I need to take physics or any of these courses over?

I have 8 AP Calc credits and my advisor suggested that I take multicalc at my college just to show that I was competant in college-level calc, so I did. I don't know about your science credits b/c it would seem kind of dumb to retake them all. You could probably just go ahead and start with the upper-level chem, bio, and phys classes, but if I were you, I'd ask your premed advisor.

Most schools don't care about having AP physics, but a number of them care about having AP bio. There's no need to re-take these courses if they appear on your transcript, but I second Thundrstorm's suggestion to take upper-level courses in those areas. You should take advanced bio (biochem, anatomy, cell biology) anyway.

Your advisor is correct. Take at least an equal number of credits of courses beyond the introductory level to prove yourself. Even if those AP courses were good, you were competing against other high school students, not college students. You will also need competitive MCAT scores. Physics is the least important of those high school courses; you can pass on taking physics electives if you choose to, but make up the credits in something like biochemistry.

Most people probably disagree with me, but i say take them...here's why....you never know wher eyou are going to apply and some schools will not take AP credit in place of the 4 main science pre-reqs (g chem, phys, bio, and org)....why take a chance and not be able to apply to a school you want....with me i used g chem.....and when i realized that miami didn't take AP credits, i eneded up taking g chem in my junior year......i TA this class, so taking it for the teacher I TA for and taking it with students I TA, was kind of akward.......anywya, you never know, plus it'll be an easy A, assuming you got a 4 or 5.....so you'll have a high GPA in your main classes.....good review for your MCAT as well........i say take them.

The bottom line is this: You should still be able to apply with the AP credits...if the schools tell you after you're accepted that you need to take the courses before you matriculate, then you can very easily do that. I just don't think its that big of a deal.

According to their website, the University of Miami Medical School does take AP credits. This is copied from their website:
AP credits are accepted and can be used to satisfy the requirements for English, biology, and inorganic chemistry, as long as the credits appear on a college transcript and are verified by AMCAS. The English requirement can also be met by literature courses, or by writing-intensive courses in any subject.

Yeah you're right, I just checked their site...however, they just recently changed that, i specifically remember that it said they would not and this was as recent as this past october.......anyways, I would still recomment retaking, its an easy A......gpa looks good....an A in g chem is better than a B in Quanitative Chemical Analysis..........you're gpa matters a lot, is my point....up to you though.........i know there are other schools that dont' take AP....check out school websites.......however, most do take AP..........i only used my AP calc............
