Hi,

My daughter is starting premed at Univ of Texas as Bio major this fall. She has multiple AP credits earned during high school. Is there any recommendation in general which AP credits one should Not use in college ?
As Medical school require Math course to be taken in college , Should she use AP credit for AP Cal AB and Cal BC or AP Stats earned during high school ?

Looking for generic advise on course work one should take(bio major) in first , second and third year considering no gap year for med school.

Thank you for the help !

It would be wise of your daughter to not use her science and math AP credits if she has no intention of finishing her degree in less than 4 years.

Most of the time the prerequisites that are fulfilled via AP Credits have to be replaced by upper-level, harder coursework. Taking these upper-level courses is unnecessary and often a burden. Pay attention to the explicit requirements. Taking calc 2 instead of multi-variable calculus won't hurt your chances at medical school — after all, you would still be fulfilling their math requirements.

Feel free to use your credits for the humanities but keep in mind you may need to take 2 semesters worth of writing extensive courses to fulfill requirements at some schools.

Here's the generic advice. My understanding is that high school students at most high schools can take AP classes without taking the exam that would gain them advance placement credit in college. It's OK to gain AP credits for political science or economics but kids who want to go to med school should not take the exams that would give them credit for chemistry, biology or physics. Your kid wants to make her first year of college a mulligan. Furthermore, the people in admissions offices are going to be looking for four terms of chemistry on her transcript, for example, and if she has AP credit for chemistry, she might have to take something horrible like physical chemistry. Ouch!
