It is my understanding that pathologists with AP/NP training are not in very high demand, and mostly go into academic positions. If I was going to pursue this career path, are there additional fellowships I could add on to make myself more marketable. Specifically, I am fascinated by the neuropath, but am trying to be practical in terms of salary, etc. Ideally, I would want to do something related (at least anatomically) such as Head and Neck pathology. Does anyone have any insights into "np-related" subspecialties that would make it more profitable?

You can be fascinated by a specialty yet not do a fellowship. Do your electives, etc. Many private groups/hospitals will sign out neuropath cases without a neuropathologist. The thing is, lots of the tough cases (i.e. brain tumors) are the domain of surgeons at academic centers or large private hospitals. Smaller community groups don't see much neuropath - maybe a meningioma here and there or an evacuated clot.

Most NP do only NP, or predominantly NP.

What is this fascination on these boards with doing multiple specialties? What is wrong with being good at one thing? You'll be better at it!

We got tons of threads on this already rolling. Personally, I do not believe more than 10-12 TOTAL neuropathologists need to be trained/year nationwide. Heck, maybe less. As already said, do an elective in it but I wouldnt recommend a fellowship.
