Ok guys please discuss the pros and cons and why you choose an apartment or an extended stay for each semester during pharmacy school?

Obviously can't speak for all of them, but most of the extended stay hotel type scenarios I've looked at ended up being full of illegal activity...so much so that I wouldn't feel safe staying there for any length of time. The only benefit of extended stay over an apartment is that if the extended stay gets too bad you probably can get out of it more easily than an apartment (which will most likely have at least a 6 month lease, probably 12). If you can afford an apartment in a halfway decent neighborhood that comes with good reviews I'd definitely go that route instead.

"Extended Stay America - Nightly Rates from $94.99"
So that's pushing $3000 per month. You can get a two bedroom around here for like $800. Plus that place is basically like a hotel, from what I've seen, so it's probably loud and full of vacationers/partiers, and set up more like a studio apartment.

This is the only "extended stay" that I know of around here though, maybe there are other options that aren't so one-sided.

Where do you live? A decent one is $200 - $300 a week or so where I live.

I've never really considered extended stay apts. I think it'd be easier to find a room to rent in a house for a cheaper price.

Those are like apartments; you can stay for a night, or months if necessary. And you are correct, they are expensive.

And then there are those "residential hotels" that are often quite dicey.

Extended stay suites are the best and I do prefer them...but they are very expensive like many people have mentioned. You gotta pay at least $2500 to $3000 a month for them.

If you wanna save money go on Criaglist and find a room in someone else's house for rent. 🙂

I saw go full weekly/monthly motel that only accepts cash. At the least you'll get some sweet stories to tell others. Make a blog: "living gritty" or some other equally cliche name. Recreational Slumming is the new hot trend I hear.

I looked at the extended stay rooms and I didn't like them at all, crappy. I guess that's y u pay 200 bucks a week. A nicer one would definitely cost more. Thanks for commenting you guys. Two heads are better than one

I hate to go against popular opinion on here, but the extended stay option would give you easier access to hookers. Not the Alaskan sign-on bonus hookers, but hookers nonetheless.

Sign on bonus hookers?

Well yeah, people got tired of just being offered million dollar contracts in Alaska, so they started adding free hookers to the mix to help stimulate the Arctic Economy, you know, more green jobs.

No, an apartment will make you feel more at home and might be more secure or safe. Like previously mentioned, the extended stay establishments might attract questionable residents. I'd assume those who can't pass a background check or credit application, perhaps.

Both have a different scenario, If you staying in an apartment so it will be good for you due to cost and may you get decent neighborhood but if you have a budget then you have to find some good weekly hotels. In case want to stay long term than extend stay is perfect for you!

Great advice! Hopefully the OP is still weighing this decision ~5 years later and checks this thread again.

Extended stay? Never heard of people doing this. I'm guessing you'll be surrounded by prostitutes and drug deals.
