I have been accepted to OSU and I am going to visit Tulsa this weekend. I would appreciate any suggestions from current DO students there on good places to live. I am really thinking about Westport since it is right next to the school and they give you a discount, but the students during interviews mentioned that occasionally the whole area had a bad smell because of the refinery. So any thoughts on this matter, or better places to live would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

Try apartments down near 61st or 71st. There is no traffic in Tulsa in the mornings, so live at a place you would enjoy.

I recommend Fountain Crest at 71st & Lewis (or other apartments in the area.)

PM me if you want more info.

I wouldn't recommend living near school as there are no grocery stores or places to eat, and it's not the best part of town.

Thank you for the info. Do you know how much the rent is at Fountain Crest? I tried to look at ApartmentGuide.com, but it is not listed.

1 bedroom - $399 / month

(the apartments by the school are $499 / month --- both have comparable amenities)

I'd go with Westport as they have better amenities and other perks. PM me if you have any questions.

Fountain Crest has the same amenities & perks, but is 100 bucks cheaper

(the apartment is larger as well)

My favorite apartment I EVER lived in was the Barrington at 65th and Mingo. They're a little older (mid 80's construction), but I loved it. They kind of divide a nice subdivision from some cheaper apts (Glen Eagles, they used to be called--no clue if they're still that or not).

I'm not a big fan of the whole 61st to 81st/Lewis to Peoria/Riverside neighborhood. I lived there once upon a time (like in 97) and I HATED it. Don't know what it's like now, but it was definitely too ghetto (or actually, barrio) for me. There used to be quite a bit of violent crime in the apts in that area (armed robberies, rapes, and the occasional murder)--but currently, most of that stuff's moved back north--for now.

If you live in southeast Tulsa (Broken Arrow, Bixby, area near Woodland Hills Mall), then traffic CAN be a player (although, I don't know what time OSU classes start--or if you plan on going to 'em). Still, as mentioned above, anywhere in Tulsa to anywhere else in Tulsa is a 20 minute drive most of the time.

you will be fine as long as you are near Hwy 75 or Broken Arrow Expressway (you can get to school quickly with minimal traffic either way)

I disagree as Westport has the largest fitness facility, computers with high speed internet access, 3 pools, copy machine, and of course the location.

Walking to concerts and Oktoberfest is priceless. Not to mention the river parks trail for running, blading, biking.

Also, as someone who likes to get up 10 minutes before class starts and eat lunch at home, Westport is ideal.

Lastly, it won the 2004 Best of Tulsa apartment award.

And with student discount and summer rent half-price, Westport is the same price as Fountain Crest.

It really depends on your priorities.

If you want grocery stores, fast food restaurants, sit down restaurants, banks, drug stores, bars, retail areas, and avoidance of vermin that live near rivers, then south Tulsa is more ideal.

If you don't want to wake up and see that school, then south Tulsa is ideal.

As for the price they quoted me (with student discount); Westport was more expensive.

As far as running/biking, etc. fountain crest is within walking distance of riverside drive, with its parks and trails. Concerts by Westport are rare, and Oktoberfest is only once a year.

Do you really want to drive miles away to eat dinner every night and/or drive miles away to run to the store?

I think not.

The industrial area near Westport is much more ghetto. Fountain Crest has their own security, and police frequently control the complex.

Albertsons is a 5-minute drive and so is Cherry Street with Kilkenny's, etc.

Brookside is about 8 minutes drive down Riverside.

And I do enjoy my postcard view of downtown and the river.

At last count 5 cops live in Westport, one happens to be my neighbor.

And the most important element has been left out:

three of the girls in Westport's office are smokin' hot.

game, set, match.

You'll notice, I wasn't defending Westport (or the refineries, or the section 8 housing down the road).

I appreciate all the info, I will probably check into all three and make my decision from there. For any others who view this thread...any other suggestions are welcome.

south tulsa has some really expensive apartments but are really nice there are some really really sweet ones by my house at 81st mingo. right on 169 get to school in probably in 15-20 min really low traffic all highway.

Also if you sign a 13 month lease with westport with the 515 dollars a month payment you get 700 dollars worth of coupons that can be used 100 dollars per pay cycle. so that brings down the average rent with the student discount on a 13 month cycle to about $409. distance is nice, up to you though. and the above is if you can use the coupons concurrently with the student discount. I am not for sure though

I think that westport is in a rather high crime area. I personally would be afraid to live over there. As for there not being traffic in Tulsa in the mornings is simply false. It IS a city. There will be a rush hour. It may not be like Dallas traffic or something, but if you had class at say 8:30 am and you were coming from the 71st street area, I would say it would easily take you 20-30 minutes to get to class. There are some really cute apartments off of 15th and 21st street that are near the school, in a nice area, and near the cherry street/utica square area. They're in old buildings and very retro looking. I would love to live there. If you just drive down those roads from Riverside drive, you'll see a ton of them.

Between Lewis and 75 on 71st, there is zero traffic in the morning. 75 also has no traffic all the way to campus. Yes there are some cars on the read, but you can drive at least 5 over the speed limit the entire time.

If you take Riverside, on the other hand, then you have another story altogether. Avoid riverside and take the highway, and you'll be good to go.

If you start wandering east of Lewis on 71st, especially as you get towards Sheridan and Memorial, then yes you will get traffic in the morning (fortunately this is in the opposite direction of school.)

Boomer also used to live with all of the other fabulous peeps at the Day Center for the Homeless which is downtown for those of you who didn't know. He also spent a few months at the Y downtown. Apparently, according to him, those were the "best months" of his life "livin' with the boys!" Dude, Boomer, just divorce your poor wife already and come out of the closet. Then you and your BF, C.T. Martin, can run away to one of those states that allows same-sex marriages. I support you and C.T. 100%, buddy!!

Live in Westport. It's a 100 yards from the school. You'll come to greatly appreciate the convenience during the school year. You can wake up 15 minutes before class, you can go home for lunch, and you can take study breaks at home. If you need a 1 hour power nap, you don't have to do it on the table at school. Direwolf's right, most things you need are within 10 minutes from the apartment.

I lived there for my first 2 years of school and didn't regret a minute of it. They really cater to the med students.
