Studying mainly first aid for this stuff...

Does a distal median nerve injury not cause loss of opposition of the thumb (ape hand)

Also, is loss of opposition of the thumb an inability to abduct as they say on page 354.

median nerve damage would cause loss of opposition (ape hand) and loss of abduction of thumb
adduction of thumb I think is ulnar

Exactly what I thought. 2009 FA only lists loss of opposition under proximal median injury. I would think a proximal lesion would include clawing of 2 and 3 as well as loss of opposition. I would think a distal would involve the clawing as it says AND the loss of opposition. So they would both do the same thing.

I furthermore would say that opposition and abduction are two very different things and ape hand would be due to loss of oppostion, not abduction.

glad this came up TODAY (as I just noticed it a few hours ago while going through Musculoskeletal)...I only picked up on the the thumbs thing because HY ANATOMY says both distal and proximal involve the thumb....So I just crossed out the useless chart in FA and filled it in (albeit HY might be too detailed...gets a little crazy with the PIP, DIP, MP stuff...but hey, I can see them (board q's) going off on that confusing stuff too.

That whole section in first aid is confusing. Poorly organized IMO.

*assuming* it's not an error in HY Anatomy...
this is what it says on the chart (page 227):

"median nerve at the elbow...abd, opp, and flex of thumb are lost"
"median nerve at the wrist...abd and opp of thumb are lost"
