I was looking to apply to an academic IM/gas program but with step failure and having to take 2 attempts I wondered if it would be futile. To outweigh this failure, what could I do in 3rd year that may help in my application to land said IM academic programs or having a shot for DR? I'm assuming 240+ on step 2, honoring multiple shelves, and glowing evals. Am I stuck to community programs or relying on FM? Should I not risk improving on step 2 and only disclose COMLEX scores. Thank you.

Easy there partner… one step at a time. Did you pass step 1 on the 2nd try? People might be able to give you better advice later this year when you have actually completed some of the things listed above. Not to say that you can’t, but easier said than done. Hard to predict at this point, but the optics of matching DR or gas at this point is a steep climb with a step 1 failure and being DO. Why do you want academic IM? If it is for fellowship purposes, might be an easier road finding solid community programs that have your desired fellowship in-house, because academic IM as a DO can once again be an uphill battle with a step 1 failure.
