I have had a couple people edit my essay and they both identified it as sounding like an application to the Peace Corps. A couple dental experiences I've had involve helping the less fortunate and I talk about them in the essay. Is it ok fir my essay to come across like this? I have heard some schools look highly upon it, but not certain. Thanks for the help!

I don't think that is bad. Just don't make yourself out to be like Captain Planet and you should be fine.

From my personal experience, I wrote a short essay (around 2,000 words) because I didn't know it could be 4500 words. One interviewer told me that he liked it because it was succinct, easy to read, and didn't talk a whole lot about volunteering (didn't have many to talk about).

IMO I think talking about your past and what drove you towards dentistry is good. And then talk about the present and what you are doing now and why these things helped you to decide on dentistry for sure. And if you have enough room, you should talk about the future and what you might plan on doing.

isn't it 4500 characters, and not words?

oh yeah, and my essay sounds kind of like a selfish - i want a career, this looks like a good career, so i want - essay... is that bad?

Just be yourself. If you are a humanitarian by nature, it will naturally show in your essay. Likewise, if you are career and goal-oriented, that will show in your essay. These two essays would be starkly different, but both of these candidates could ultimately become excellent dentists. Trying to figure out exactly what the adcoms want to hear only sets you up for frustration.

true!

mine won't be humanitarian at all. i may mention that i like helping people but it certainly won't be the focal point of my statement. i'm just going to be honest as to why i want to become a dentist.
