I have a 3.01 oGPA and a 2.653 sGPA, but I'm a biology major and I'm just finishing my sophomore year of undergrad so I have yet to take physics. Also I was thinking of applying during my senior year, so I have an extra year to bring up my overall gpa and science gpa, because I have a lot of science classes yet to take. My GPA is low because I really blew my freshman year and this year I've done considerably better (2.7 Freshman year- 3.2 sophomore year) I'm shadowing a dentist this summer and have lots of EC's. If I score in the 20's on the DAT what are my chances assuming I continue on the upward trend of my grades, because I think I can do much better than a 3.2.

I guess what I'm asking is: 1)Do all science courses count? or do they just look at the required ones?
2)What is a feasible s and o gpa I should aim for with my current record that gives me a good chance of getting in, assuming I've already completed 60 credit hours.
3)If I score in the 20s on the DAT, how much will that offset my lower gpa?

from what ive heard from dental students, 20s seem to be the magic numbers for DAT. obviously, the lower your GPA, the better you need to do on the DAT. Your overall GPA is important, but your BCP is more imporant (bio/chem/phys average). If i were you, i'd shoot for an absolute minimum a 3.2 BCP, but solid applicants will have higher (3.4) so you've got some work to do. I dont want to mention school names, but i know of one school in PA that literally places applicants in excel and filters their highest GPA and DAT and makes cutoffs that way. Of course, your ECs are vital and shadowing is great. some dentists will even let you do 4 handed dentistry with them if you feel comfortable asking after you have shadowed for a while...overall, keep up your ECs, study hard for DAT since that might make or break you if you have a lower GPA, but to be safe, you gotta get that GPA up!! g luck

1. All science courses will either count in your BCP or other science GPA.
2. Try getting your overall/science to 3.4 in the next 2 years.
3. A good amount. Just apply to the schools that focus heavily on DAT.

2.7 to 3.2 isn't much of an increase unless you keep going up.
3.7 next time and then your in better shape. 4.0 and your set.
Taking summer classes can also speed everything up.
Think about like this, study extra hard now, and you can apply junior year just fine.
