Appalachian region ??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know that at least WV and KY fall under the appalachian region as far as med school apps go. however, geographically speaking, appalachia extends from georgia to at least pennsylvania.

TN is also considered appalachian as well for most schools.

The Appalachian Mountains also stretch through Central New York. Here, they're more like annoying hills.

North Carolina as well.

Thanks for your comments. I wonder if Virginia is included. Also do they consider the whole state or just regions within those states?

Happy Labor Day everyone.

The only bad thing about labor day is the mail doesn't run and our secondaries don't arrive.🙁

Va. Beach is not Appalachia 🙂. These schools tend to also consider if you're planning on working within these states' rural regions. It might be harder if you're from the coast, but as long as you mention an interest in staying in Virginia within your essays, the location of your hometown shouldn't pose a problem.

I think Appalachia is only the place where the mountains (hills) are in the state. I'm from KY and there are no mountains where I live. But if you go to the rural area where my mom was raised in eastern ky, then you'd KNOW that was considered appalachia. It's everything people make fun of.

I think the term Appalachia usually refers to the rural, under-priveledged areas of TN, KY, WV and NC (maybe GA and others, as well.). These areas are all extremely medically underserved.

Parts of New York state are Appalachia as well (madison County)
