Hello everyone,

I am currently on my health-system rotation at a community hospital. I'm having some problems with my preceptor. I really appreciate the learning opportunities and how he pushes me to stretch beyond my comfort zone to learn, but he is always so discouraging. He would tell me to take more leadership roles and study this and do that, but he never acknowledge what I have done. I have never been able to meet his expectations. Every time when talking to me, he always started with how he was disappointed in me that one time I did not know the answer but never acknowledge what I have tried to improve, such as taking the initiative to answer a DI question, lead the team in choosing project, or writing newsletter. With that said, he always complemented the other students even though I was the person who took the initiative and did so much work. During a discussion, I could not even tell he is interested or not. He always seem so tired and irritated at me =(.

I apologize for the vent, but I'm really stressed out and have no ideas what else to do to satisfy my preceptor. I feel tremendously discouraged at the moment. At this point I can't even find the momentum to do work or to be confident in my ability. I feel like I'm the worst student they ever had. I aced my other rotation though. If anyone has any suggestions or advices, please let me know. Greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Aww, I’m sorry to head that. Some preceptors are just like that. Continue to do your thing, if he expresses disappointment ask him nicely, “I’ve been trying my best Professor xyz, could you please offer some suggestions on how I could improve because I’m very interested in this rotation and want to excel.” Just show him you’re interested

My best preceptors were the ones whose expectations I often didn’t meet, and the very best one caused me to lose about 10 pounds from stress.

They also were the ones to never pat me on he back for things I did correctly.

It’s six weeks, buck up, put your head down, and grind it out. Unless you’re in serious danger of failing the rotation, you might thank this preceptor long after you’re gone.
