Hey guys, I'm a first year undergrad in Biology. I'm getting good grades so far (first semester all As) but I don't really have any extracurricular activities. I know of a few things I could do like volunteer at a dental practice, or do research (<-actually I have no clue what that consists of) Grades are my number 1 priority, but I think I'll need some extracurriculars to make my app shine. So with a budget of around 5 hours a week, what would be the best thing for me to do to make myself a stronger applicant?

I also want to work on my hand dexterity so any suggestions for that are also welcome.

Thanks

My friend...........you are only a freshman. Don't worry about what will look good. Just do what you want to do, simply follow where your interests lead you. Have you shadowed yet, because that would be your most logical first step.

Don't worry..................I'm sure that you will make a fine gunner one day.

I'm in the same situation as you, alpha13. I haven't done anything for my freshman year because I wanted to make sure I could handle my courseload (which I'm doing pretty well). I did join an ASDA chapter at school which isn't too time consuming. I'm just taking things one step at a time. I think summer 06 I'll probably be shadowing someone. I used to be stressed out thinking about these things.

I don't understand why people ask always ask what they should be doing or what groups they should join. Just do ANYTHING. Really. There is no ideal applicant profile that all admissions committees are looking for, and any applicant that deviates from that is BLAH. Pursue your interests, desires, or anything that you like to do. They want to see that you have a life outside the classroom. Please dont volunteer, join clubs, or do something just to "make your application shine" because you are wasting your own time and everyone elses. What ever you choose to do, put your heart into it and be passionate about it. Just have some fun. Those four years go by pretty fast.

🙂
