Just wanted to get a feel if a good number of applicants get accepted after they finished their secondaries a little late (november or december).

THanks

being complete in November or December sounds really really late. Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I might have no idea what I'm talking about.

That's not "a little late." My guess would be next to none since aren't most schools' deadlines back in October and November? A few have Dec deadlines but most have rolling admissions as well so you'd be severely cutting down on your options by applying so late. If you're just completing now (or just completed recently), you're looking at being a reapplicant next year. Considering that 55-60% of applicants will be reapplying next year as is, your chances of being a reapplicant go up significantly if you finish your primary after so many have already received acceptances.

It just blows my mind that people would wait to turn things in this late. People, if you interview in September you could be accepted by October! Then it's case closed, happily ever after.

Yeah...that's as late as possible. It's not a 100% chance you'd have to reapply, but the probability is very high (unless you have a phenomenal application). I mean, there's always the possibility you could interview after the class is "full" (i.e. interview for the WL) and be amazing and with luck get in off that. But, imo, if I knew I wasn't going to be complete until this late in the process, I'd probably save my money, get my app together, and apply as early as possible next app cycle to maximize my chances.

Wow...I was complete in October(because of financial restraints) and I think I kind of screwed myself. Luckily, I've still been getting interview invites. I can't even imagine completing in December. 😱

Very discouraging guys...lol

well most schools do offer interviews through March though. Wouldn't you think that SOME seats are available even up till January.

FYI AMCAS Deadlines: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/2010deadlines.htm

I know Albert Einstein says Please keep in mind that you have until March 15, 2010 to get all of your documentation to us, but don't wait that long!

I also know that Univ of Maryland's secondary deadline was Dec. 15. I am sure there are more schools with later deadlines.

The problem is people who were complete in October (which is considered "a little late" when you factor in those who had their apps in since the summer) still haven't been reviewed yet in many cases so imagine where your app is in the line. Lots of schools started interviewing in August, so that's about 4+ months of interviewing candidates ahead of you. Some schools also are already offering interviews into February. Nobody is saying there is absolutely NO chance that you will get in...you just put yourself in a rough position. Some schools already have their classes full by december/january and are interviewing for waitlist spots. However, this isn't to say that you can't get in or in off the waitlist. Many schools have considerable waitlist movement and others not so much. It's not over until it's over...but you might be in for a long wait to know for sure what your fate will be for next year. Then again maybe you will prove us wrong 😎. Good luck to you though, I hope things turn out well for you. 👍

So if you finished you secondaries in Nov or Dec it still takes a while for it to become Complete. Some schools take up to 2-3 months to complete you while others maybe be less than 1 months.

So that means you'll be complete ~Jan/Feb. I was complete in October and I'm getting interview news now about 2 months later. So I have only a couple interviews set for Jan.

So that means you'll probably be hearing back in March/April for April/May interviews. Do you see the problem here? A lot of schools stop interviewing in March/April.

Essentially just judging on the time it takes due to how many apps they have to go through it doesn't look good for you.

Now the only exception is that if you have like a 4.0 and 42 on your MCAT and is just super awesome. Otherwise, I'm sorry but I think you'll be lucky if you get 1 interview.

Sadly, I see your point. Will keep SDN updated on my status thou.

I'm still dying to know if there's someone, anyone, that got in as a late applicant!!

To quote one of my former pts: "Would you rather me just lie to you and tell you what you want to hear?" LOL...

By Feb or March, you're interviewing for their waitlist at most schools. Sure, you might get invited but the chances are slim to none. Additionally, getting your primary in now means your secondary might get in sometime.... before New Years'? Meaning they'd see it in mid- to late-January (fact is, the holidays bog down everything -- and that includes admissions depts, schools sending transcripts, the mail, etc.). By then, they've probably filled up interview slots through at least Feb, if not most of March. If you're lucky, you might actually get interviewed before everyone else has accepted their invites and put down deposits!

When you say you wonder if anyone has gotten in "late," the answer is a resounding "YES... but... by late we meant September or early October."

Unless you have killer stats, like 4.00 with 40MCAT, chance of getting in anywhere is quite low.

I remember reading on SDN someone was accepted to NYMC couple years ago after applying in December. But I think it is very rare.

I was complete in September and still haven't heard from 12 (out of 20) schools. If they're still reviewing the September/October completes, then I can't imagine when they'll begin to review the November/December bunch.

Dear god have mercy on my soul.

I knew I shouldn't waited for my last recommendation to come in. I would of had it in by late-October then. I knew ittt!!!

I mean, don't give up hope completely. There is still a slight chance. Just be realistic with the fact that it is likely you might be reapplying next year. At least you have a heads-up, unlike some others who might be complete late but not know how big of a disservice this is to their application! Beef up your ECs and show your commitment to your dreams. You might get in this year, you might not. Just have to wait it out.

wow all because of LOR! 😕 That really sucks... Going forward I would suggest you doing everything on your end no matter what. Submitting apps, completing secondaries etc. I was complete at many schools end of summer but my MCAT scores didn't come out until Sept 2. However, once they did come out I had 2 interviews within 2-3 weeks. I bet if I had waited to send my application until afterward I wouldn't have received an interview until november. There were some schools that I applied to late (October) I still haven't heard anything from them...probably won't at this point. I didn't believe just how much applying early matters but it really does.

same here. my app got delayed by one month b/c of waiting for LOR's. I already had primary app submitted but files are not considered complete without LOR's. October is pretty late but it does how competitive of an applicant you are. If you're just average, then your chances are not so good.

I have gotten interviews after being complete in early November. Its not that late until the schools say its late ...they still have spots open and obviously that's why they took your secondary. Just calm down😉

don't think I'll ever be calm until at least 1 interview comes in. But its good to see some ppl got in with late interviews- sheds some much needed hope for me.

that mdapps guy... he had a 3.4/30 and got an interview to yale!!!! 😡
i want one toooo!

I was complete late october/early november at many schools and have gotten 2 interviews and 2 holds so far. no rejections.

and no, I'm not a stellar candidate. 3.7 OA/3.44 BCPM, 31 MCAT. Some good ECs, strong essays and rec letters, but that's about it. Nothing exceptional about me. Just make sure to apply broadly and don't set your sights too high. Your state schools may still give you a chance- mine are!

who? damn... wonder what his ECs were... coming up with a vaccine for HIV?

I would like to add that one of the schools I applied to, I wasn't complete with until DECEMBER 1. They offered me an interview a week later! And no I don't live in one of those remote states that only accepts in-state applicants--this is a private school that accepts people from all over the country!

yes but you are prob an amazing applicant

lol, every thread provides a medium for bannie to whine. get over yourself, you got into one of the most selective medical schools in the country.

haha, as much as I would love that, I'm really just average. Like I said before, 3.7OA/3.44BCPM, 31Q MCAT, good essays, LORS and decent E.C.s (lacking a little in volunteering). I haven't done anything noteable or crazy like serve in the peace corps or win a nobel prize or anything like that. I'm just a regular applicant. With the kinds of emphasis people on these boards place on timeliness, you'd think I was pretty much not going to get in with such a late submission unless I found the cure to cancer. But sometimes, I guess your application might be just what a particular school is looking for, and you may get that interview offer anyway; you never know!

In terms of interviews, not acceptance rates, one in five gets an interview in July, and towards the end (December/January) that falls to three or four in a thousand. It's foolish to apply late, even in terms of economics. There's no benefit to applying late, unless you are convinced you can improve your application significantly over the course of a few months.

Of course, I know someone who applied minutes before the deadline last year, and was invited for an interview at Albert Einstein at the last minute last May, despite the fact that she had a 29 on her MCAT. They needed to fill a spot or two, and looked past that aspect of her application to the fact that she had a nearly 4.0 GPA and an amazing application.

Just maximize your odds by doing well and applying early!

Where did you get that statistic?

I am in the exact same boat as you. I started/finished my secondaries october/november. I have one interview coming in January and they got back to me so fast, I wonder if it's bcuz I am in state there. Out of the 14 schools I applied to, I haven't heard a peep from 7 of them, the other 7 have only completed my application status. So I am scared too myself :scared: and kickin myself for not applying earlier. It's crazy how long it takes for schools to even complete an aplicant, geesh. Anyways hope this gives you some hope, we could all use some in this process.

And thanks for starting this thread, it would be wonderful if ppl actually responded to the question posed instead of using it as an opportunity to spread their holier than thou attitude about what you should or shouldn't have done. 🙄

I'm guessing that many schools have booked nearly all of their remaining interview slots. The people fighting over the remaining slots probably submitted secondaries back in Oct/early Nov. If you're submitting now, you may find schools that are willing to take your money but my bet is that your application doesn't even get looked at. Sorry if this thread has burst your bubble a bit but if it were me, I'd save my cash for next cycle's applications.
