I am currently working full time while going to school to finish my prereqs, and im barely surviving on my salary, so i was wondering how much did you guys spend on your applications and everything on average on all the schools applied..... can you guys tell me how much you spent and how many schools you applied to so i can kind of have the rough estimate of how much i need to come up from now until fall 2007 when i apply......thanks

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1K. That was for 8 or 9 schools though.

Others spend much more than that, however. I've never really added it up because it's not something I like to think about much! 🙂

A whole boatload of money to be exact...

LOL!👍 Yea, I spent that and then some. :meanie:

Honestly, I have no idea. I didn't keep track of it because I spent it over a long period of time. Plus, then you have to factor in the cost to go to the interviews. It is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000 including interviews and then another $2000 for my deposit.😱 I applied to a lot of schools though. It is really expensive to apply to medical school.:meanie: Good luck!

A bazillion dollars and then some... 😡

I feel that the excessive costs really hurt me because I had to space out both my designations and my supplemental applications and then only submit them as I could afford it. This meant that many of the applications went in substantially later than I would have liked.

Quite frankly, I am still trying to figure out just how I am going to pay a deposit if and when I am accepted somewhere. With my husband recently getting laid off (and our water heater deciding to break) we are extremely strapped for cash.

I guess it will all work out but the financial part of getting into school can be really stressful!

Good luck to you! 🙂

Maybe you could try a home equity loan with your husband... do you rent or own?

OUCH! That stinks! I had to space mine out too, but I started submitting them in July. I hope that you are able to work it out. :luck: 🙂

You should first see if you qualify for the waivers...both DO and MD schools have them. If you qualify then the cost to applying is A LOT cheaper. AACOMAS gives you 3 schools for free and then you pay regular price for anything on top of that but most of the DO schools waive the secondary fee. AACOM gives you 11 schools for free and then 30 dollars each after that and the MD schools mostly also waive the secondary fee.

If you don't... then I would be count on spending about 150 per school just to apply and then interview costs... so maybe 2-4k depending on how much and where you apply. Meaning if you apply far away and get an interview then you have to factor in the cost of the flight/trip and hotel stay.

Hope that helps!

3 schools, $25. I qualified for the fee waiver on AACOMAS. If you think applying is expensive, just wait until acceptances start rolling in. See all the threads where people (including myself) are whining about their acceptance deposits ranging from $100 to $3000 with extremely short deadlines and waiting to hear from other schools. It is a frustrating and expensive process.

lots.... I applied to 13 MD schools and 9 DO schools so that's 1,100 just in primary application fee's. I think I spent around 1200 on secondaries for MD schools and 500 on secondaries for DO schools. I am interviewing at the end of the month and each interview is around 350 bucks including airfare/hotel/car.

Expect to spend around 5,000 dollars on the whole process. I just got out additional student loan money to cover it. Go for the fee waiver though. It has to be filled out really early(Like febuary or something like that) so get on that. By the time I realized it existed it was too late for me.

Good luck,
Don't let money hold you back from what you want to do.

What does it take to qualify for the waiver?

I didn't even try because we both work full time...

They want parental information regardless of your age. Basically, you need to be a homeless and orphaned to qualify.🙄:meanie:

As far as I understand it, MD and DO are different in terms of the waiver. At least I hope so. My husband and I are applying only DO. We would not be eligible for the AMCAS fee waiver because it does require parental info. I believe the AACOMAS only requires the SAR which is calculated from your FAFSA. We do not put our parents info on our FAFSAs because we are independent. I'm a SAHM and student and my husband is a student and does work but we don't make much. If you both work full-time you may make too much money even for the AACOMAS fee waiver. Did that make sense?

$2360 to be exact (both MD and DO) and I haven't even got any interviews yet 🙁

🙁 That stinks! I hope that things get better soon. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Hang in there!:luck:

This is correct. I even fought with AMCAS over their MCAT fee waiver for requiring parental information for people in situations where it is irrelevant. It is clearly age and family status discrimination, but they refuse to see the truth. I would file a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities, but what with all my studies, I don't have time. I gues they count on that.

I didn't realize that AACOMAS was different. I don't remember if I looked at it or not. I know I checked into AMCAS and also argued with them because I am 29, married, and the mother of four children.🙄 LOL! Stupid stuff! My parental info has not been on anything for a long time. Oh well, I just spaced my applications out like everyone else and did end up getting a little help from my parents. Hope that you all are able to work it out!:luck:

We own... but I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas (meaning depressed economy due to lots of airline employees) where the home prices have not exactly shot up! We have some equity, but it's going to be eaten up when we sell. But, like I said I know we will be okay... things just seem to always work out! 🙂

how do you get the application fee waiver?

how do you get the application fee waiver?

Contact them around May 1st. They will tell you the requirements. In the past, it has been just a copy of the SAR from the FAFSA and a letter requesting the fee waiver. It will waive the fee for three schools. After that, you start paying for each school as if you have no fee waiver. Be careful though, there is a short time limit on the fee waiver. You have like 45 days to file your app if I remember correctly.

You get both online as I recall. For AACM go to the website and look for the fee waiver link and fill out all the info. I think AACOM was the say way? I think there was something in the FAQ section that told you to how to apply with the SAR. Just make sure you apply for the waivers before you send out the primary applications... cause then it wouldn't be that helpful 😛

how do you get the application fee waiver?

I guess im the anomaly......about 8-10K with interviews- and Im still considering going to more!? I felt it was best to Explore EVERY option, and I probably originally applied to too many schools, but I didn't think I would get multiple acceptances. I just looked at it as my one shot to achieve my dream- OH yeah, and I had seven interviews to go to, which is NOT CHEAP!
