I am currently finishing a Masters degree in a field not really related to dentistry, but I am also taking science classes so I can get going on my prerequisistes. I am also non-traditional. I have really good grades 3.8+ undergrad and 3.9+ in graduate. I am doing well in the sciences, 3.5 or so, though organic is pretty tough. I have good volunteer experiences and I will be shadowing next week. I have two uncles who are dentists and two cousins in dental school right now.

The questions I have are, first, when is the first day applications can be submitted? Second, if I submit my application on this date, but take the DAT a little later, like in July, will my application still be early enough for consideration? I am just very worried about my chances because I will not be completing the prerequisites until next Fall at the earliest or maybe even Spring of 2007!

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd

Your grades are definitely up there. I think this year... first day for apps was May 15. It take about 6-8 weeks for the applications to get processed and only a week or so for schools to receive your DAT. In fact, some schools subscribe to a service where they can download your DAT scores the day after you take the test. Personally, I applied late May and didnt take my DAT until late August and two schools offered me first days of interviews and I had about four or five interviews through the end of October so you can definitely take the test in July.

Thanks for your reply. So on the first day apps. can be submitted, does everything have to be filled out i.e. transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. ? I am just wondering if I should approach some of my professors and ask for letters of recommendation.

i have another question...what if you took the DAT and it was not as high as you wanted it to be....and decided not to apply. what happens to your scores and schools that you already designated for sending??? i am so confused about everything 🙁

If you are asking if AADSAS holds your app for the DAT, the answer is no. It will not hold up the process, including mailing it to the schools, for the lack of a DAT or LOR's. The main thing it needs before it gets sent is official transcripts so they can verify your GPA. Get that sent to AADSAS as soon as possible.

Don't sweat taking the DAT a little bit after your app is complete. I submitted mine in late June but didn't take the DAT til Aug. The reason is that the DAT is sent directly to the schools roght after you take the test and its quick, unlike the AADSAS!!!

A few weeks before you start to do the AADSAS application request all the transcripts to be sent to AADSAS. Also, start working on your LORs so that they can also be mailed out before you start the application. That way when you submit it online, AADSAS people can start to process it and verify your GPA.

The LOR or DAT scores will not hold up your application, but I suggest having the LOR at AADSAS when your application is processed. This way there is less of a chance for them to mess up with the LOR.

Make sure to stay on top of it, call the schools and AADSAS to make sure the materials you are sending them are received and are forwarded to the schools.

Also, START WORKING ON THE PERSONAL STATEMENT NOW! It will take the longest time to do, so if you have it all done you can fill out the application in no time.

Hi all! I've a question about the AADSAS application. I heard that the application is available for viewing online but you can't submit it until mid-May. Is that true and how do I do that? Thanks!

just a question about LRC. i'm having my professors send my LRC to dental schools directly end of may. does that mean..that the dental schools can receive my LRC WITHOUT my application in front of them..which takes about a month or two?..... how will the dental schools know who i am?..will they just keep it?..do i need to notify them that i'm an interested applicant?..

If it were me I would call the schools that you plan on applying to and ask them what they prefer. Many schools would rather you send your letters to AADSAS directly. In any case if you send them to the dental schools any way, you should print out the AADSAS matching form and have your profs include that with the letter.

I know you may not be familiar with this now, but when AADSAS opens and you follow the instructions you will see what I am talking about.

I'm a bit confused with the process as well. When you say that AADSAS opens mid-may, does that mean that we can't sign up and start to fill things out until then? Or rather that we can sign up now and start filling things out, but the actual submission must wait until then?

Thanks in advance.
