Application Fall 2011/Choice of Schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your numbers are decent, but at this stage in the cycle, I would honestly tell you to wait until next year.

Many schools stop receiving your AMCAS after Oct. 15 or Nov. 1, and there's no guarantee that you'll be verified by either of those dates. The strength of your application is irrelevant if you can't make the deadline.

Wait till next year. You will have more time to write your essays, more volunteering hours in both the hospital and the ambulance, and perhaps time to retake the MCAT if you want a better chance. 32 can still improve by 3-4 points with hard work.

The GPA is absolutely fine. Even though you disliked research, make sure that you sound like at least you tried. Don't say something like "it wasn't the right fit for me" but focus on more positive things, such as "I found that clinical opportunities exposed me to more people and better prepared me for medicine". This will not anger any PhD-type reading your application 😀

I think you have a good shot at MD with a bit more hours into the clinical / volunteering EC's.

If you are a California resident, I would retake the MCAT.

Phew, waiting until next cycle relieves a lot of stress... 😳

In addition to working two jobs, I am also taking graduate coursework and working on adding more volunteer work + shadowing. I know I am capable of doing much better on the MCAT (since I had only studied around a month when I was preparing for it and that too was not full time), but with all these activities it would make it nearly impossible for me designate the additional time I would need to study.

I thought it would be best, at this point, to try and secure better LORs and work on my activities.

I am a resident of New York.

From,
Abi

A few key factors:
- Did not go through the Pre-health committee.
- I do have a few LORs at the moment, but apart from 1 - 2, I feel they are not that great.
- Do not have a LOR from a doctor.
If your school provides a committee letter, med schools will expect to receive one. Can you get one by June of 2012?

You will have time to get some truly great LORs with the additional time you have.

Few MD schools care about an MD letter, but sometimes a committee requests one.

I agree that you should wait and apply in June2012. Your application is shaping up well. If your stats might change due to additional coursework and a new MCAT score, then it is premature to select schools.
