Application is available earlier this year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought it was always opened around then, with submission a month later.

I heard the AMCAS app is available may 1st this year? is that different than other years?

in the cycle of 2009 it was opened June 4th and I couldn't get ready until June 10. Opening early might have big implications.

wait... do you mean opened for submission, or opened so we can start filling it out? because i thought it was always "open" for about a month before it was "open" for submission. 6 days seems a little 😱

You could submit June 4th. You could access and enter information about a month before that.👍

OK, my heart jumped a little when I read this. That would mean one less month to get my stuff together. I already feel like I'm behind

What do you mean? Assuming your transcripts are ready to go, all you have to do is enter your biographical info, class list with grades, and ECs then copy and paste your personal statement.👍:luck:

Just remember to get your transcripts in early!!!

what do you think is sufficiently early? And does AMCAS accept transcripts only after they open the applications in may?

The AMCAS transcript FAQ says that they start accepting transcripts on or around May 14th, which I imagine is the start of this year's cycle. The hidden delay that some people (like me) may not be accounting for is the time it takes for your school's office to process all the end-of-term transcript requests.:luck:

Getting the timing might be tricky.... Could request it on May 5th assuming it will take ~10 days to get there, and hope it doesn't arrive early and get lost in AMCAS land!😱

I would play it safe for that. Sometimes it can take them a really, really long time to mark these things received. What you don't want is a situation where you've assumed that your transcripts just haven't been marked, when in reality they either never got there or got there too early. Can you get your office to hold the transcripts until a certain day?

What about those of us that have quarter systems and dont end school until 2nd week of june? Do we need to wait for our last quarter's grades and then get transcripts or just do it without that quarter?

I would wait for grades. Transcript processing is the longest part of AMCAS verification, but assuming your transcript leaves the office in the second or third week of June, hits AMCAS a week later and is processed within a month, you'll still be (unless there's a huuuuuuge backlog) in July-ish territory, which is just fine. While you're waiting, you can start work on secondaries, as some lucky premed(s?) will have posted the prompts online for everyone when the bulk of them start showing up in July.👍 Then you can do one-day turnarounds with secondaries (until you get backlogged).👍

(The SDN wisdom on secondary turnaround is "within two weeks of receipt," fyi.)
