I know it's early and not a very interesting question, but this needs answering eventually: How many transitional/prelim year programs do I need to apply to in order to cover for PGY2-4 programs?

Hi. Good question. I've thought about your question for a good two minutes now, and I'm quite certain that I have no idea where to find a good answer for you. I suspect that the answer will be very subjective.

Others, wiser than me, will post and hopefully give you more direction than I can.

what school do you go to; what is your board score; what are your clinical grades, what kind of prelim are you looking for, and what geographic location do you seek?

I think it totally depends on how many 2-4 programs you apply to... I only applied to 2-3, and in the end I didn't interview at any of them. You can always wait to apply to transitional years, see if you get interviews and if you really want to do that type of program. The transitional and prelim years tend to have later deadlines than categoricals. Just a suggestion 😀

I overapplied to everything. If I could do it over, I'd do a lot more research on the 2-4 programs. I would have found that I was a lot less likely to go to one of them, and saved money/time on those interview trips. Also, several 2-4 programs pretty much get you into their own prelim/trans spots somehow--find out if yours do. I did 7 or so prelim/trans interviews but my highest rank for a 2-4 was definitely below 5. Good luck!
