Hi everyone,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice about my application this cycle.

I am currently a Junior at UC Irvine and had planned on applying this upcoming cycle. I had originally planned on taking the MCAT in May, but due to the death of a loved one, I had to put it off to July as I had finals/midterms throughout the rest of May and June.

I spoke to someone about submitting my AMCAS application on June 1st and they advised me to do so. Just to get the verification complete. They also said to apply broadly in my primary application.

I have reasonable EC's (volunteering, research, tutoring ochem, part-time jobs) and I'm not an URM, but my GPA is a little on the lower side (3.4). I had a rough quarter this Spring, so I don't want to have those grades show up. Which is why I am trying to submit the primary ASAP. After I submit my primary, can I submit my Official Transcript (w/o Spring Grades to AMCAS). All of my pre-requisistes have been completed prior to this quarter anyways.

Also, I know my chances at any California Allopathic School are slim. I have looked MSAR and I checked the following schools that would be slightly more forgiving in the GPA/MCAT arena: VCU, Drexel, Meharry, and some Puerto Rican schools.

I have been very busy and I have been unable to contact a counselor at my school. But from what I understand the primary application is submitted, the transcript is sent to AMCAS, and your application goes through verification, correct?

After that, once your secondaries come in, you will submit your letters of recommendation to the schools that ask for them. This will be done through whatever agency you used. I have three letters of recommendation complete, but I need 3 more that I'm waiting on as they are from Physicians I have worked with who are very busy at the moment.

I have a lot of pressure from my father to at least apply this year to everywhere (including Caribbean schools, Puerto Rico Schools). If my MCAT score were so-so and I don't get in this cycle. Would that be a huge negative against me?

As far as the cost goes, my father really wants to pay for the primary application as he really wants to see me get in ASAP and not take a year off.

I'm sorry if these question sound elementary, I have been very sick these past few weeks and I have had midterms, after shifts, and other issues. My mother just had surgery as well last week, so I have been taking care of her.

Any help, would be genuinely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Transcript: Yes you can send it your transcript before your spring grades come out. You should request them now before the schools lock it for grade entering. You don't have to wait until after you submit your primary to submit your transcript.

AMCAS verifies your application only after all your transcripts are in and you submit it.

Taking the MCATs in July is a bit late because you won't get your scores until August. Most schools won't even look at your application until your scores are in. But since you have no choice just try to do your best and that may make up for the late app.

If your school has a letter file service you can submit it directly to AMCAS and they will send it to your schools. You DON"T need to have this part completed when you first submit your primary. You can modify this anytime after so you don't need your letters until you start filling out secondaries.

As for the schools to apply to have you looked into applying to DO schools? They have slightly lower numbers. Be sure to apply very broadly (i.e lots of schools in different tiers). I personally would not recommend going to the Caribbean but if that is something you are comfortable with then go ahead.

Ummm lol I'm sure I've missed something so if you have another question just ask! good luck!

Thank you so much for the response. I am preparing my Osteopathic application as well.

I was wondering, if I request the transcript right now and ask my school's registrar to send it to AMCAS, will it be rejected because I haven't officially submitted my application?

Also, after graduating High School, I took a Math class in the summer prior to starting at my University at a local community college. The class was not calculated in my University's transcript and thus was not part of my University GPA, but just filled up a requirement. Do I have to report the grade I got from that Math Class and submit a transcript from that Community College eventhough it was just for one summer class.

Sorry about the trivial questions!

Thanks!

Yup you should definitely submit your transcript now they will hold it for you as long as all of your info (SSN,lega name) is consistent. Many applicants do this so that they can be verified on the very first day (June 1st)

I believe that you need to send a transcript from every college where you took a college level course. so even if you took the math class in high school you still need to send in that transcript from that CC. Also be sure to enter the course on your primary app

Hi,
Another quick question, I already sent my transcript a few weeks earlier to AAMC without my spring grades. However, I have yet to actually submit my primary application. My spring grades will be up later on tonight, should I wait to see them and enter them in my primary application, or will it interfere with things when it comes to verification as the transcript that I have sent to AAMC does not have my spring grades?

Thanks in advance!

Anteaters! They had the cutest bags for interviews; it was rather endearing.

Anyhow - if you enter spring grades without a transcript, they will ask for a new one. Hence, your app will be delayed for another few weeks (time it takes to procure an official one, mail it, and back via the verification process again). If you got straight A's or a strong growth trend, then maybe it's worth it. It's your call.

Hi,
Thanks for the response! Nice to know I would have cute bags to look forward to...I would be doing backflips if I ever had the opportunity to interview at UCI SOM.

I don't think I did great in a Bio class....if I wait until 8PM and see the grade, I'm obligated to enter it right?
