Hi all - I am a 4th year DO student applying allo anesthesia this year. I've been working on a list of programs to apply to, and would love some input on the number of programs and if I should alter my list. I have read on these boards that DO students should apply to 30+ programs, and I could probably come up with 30 to apply to, but I would love to avoid going that high if I can avoid it for both financial reasons, and location reasons.

About me: I am a non-traditional DO student, 245 Step1, 270 Step 2, 3.95 GPA, honors in all my 3rd year rotations, have a surgery and medicine letter so far, and plan on getting an anesthesia letter in my upcoming rotations. I plan on applying to both categorical and advanced programs in order to make myself more competitive at certain places.

Here is my list:

Hopkins
Maryland
Penn
Thomas Jefferson
Temple
Drexel
UPMC
Allegheny
VCU
UNC
MUSC
Tufts
BIDMC
University of Chicago
UIC
Colorado
Oregon Health&Science
University of Washington
George Washington
Georgetown

Any input or advice would be welcome! Thanks!!!

4th MD candidate similar stats, I have zero research, and I had a list of programs similar to yours. I sat down with my adviser and a couple PD's and they all had similar things to say. Essentially they commented that even with my decent stats, a couple of the programs I had would be a crap shoot because of my lack of research.

You're a pretty competitive applicant, the only thing that might hinder you at some programs is the DO vs MD thing. I think most of the programs you have listed have matched DOs in the past. Hopkins, Penn, UW, Chicago, and BIDMC have a few. I think the only one I don't remember having any is OHSU, but I could be wrong (just going from memory).

Thanks for the replies! Being a small DO school, we do not have an anesthesia department and I do not have access to an anesthesia adviser, so I am figuring out a lot of this on my own.

I chose those programs partly because they all had at least one DO in the program, but I know that some of them are stretches because of both the DO thing and the lack of research. I just want to make sure that I have a balance between reach programs and middle of the road programs, and that I have a high enough number of programs that I will match somewhere. Obviously it is most important that I match somewhere...anywhere, but I want to get the best training that I can.

Do the bigger academic anesthesia programs only consider published anesthesia research when determining the strength of an applicant? Or, does published research in a unrelated field count for something?

If you are applying to Allegheny and UPMC, you should consider WVU as well. It is less than an hour south of Pittsburgh in Morgantown WV. The program is good (you will receive strong clinical training), and they are DO-friendly. Beyond that, your stats are solid and will likely not have a problem matching somewhere on that list.
