Is there any website or resource somewhere that kind of lists the general requirements needed for each type of specialty you apply to?

For example.. I am somewhat considering dermatology, but I really don't know what they look for in an applicant... up to this point the research that I have is in unrelated fields. Is that something I can still put on my application if I were to apply to derm? Or do they only care about derm related research?

Same with letters... can they be from any specialty or only derm specific? I have heard some specialties like ER only care about letters from ER, but other specialties may not have the same kind of requirements..... I'm just wondering how anybody learns this information so they know what is expected of them to apply?

When you get into medical school, join a derm interest group. You'll learn a lot by pursuing your interests early.

Generally speaking, letter from faculty in your chosen speciality are what you need.

Research is a bit different. Residencies understand that people's interests change and are typically ok with research from different fields.

Definitely look for an interest group. You can also get involved in your med school's department early - talk to residents, go to their conferences, maybe find a project to get involved in.

i'm an M3 and i'm starting to become more interested in derm now. so i feel like it may be a bit late for the interest group or trying to get involved really early with the department.. am i screwed?

Get in touch with your Derm department and set up some research project ASAP.

Not screwed at all, assuming you are competitive with grades and step 1. Just contact your department and talk to them. Trust me, they can give you better advice than we can on here for what you need to be doing right now to match.

Where can I find information about the number of residency programs? I'm a little confused because I read somewhere that there were only 4 residency spots available (sounds unrealistic..) for one of the specialties available but on the residency match summary report it said there was 700 spots..

Look up FRIEDA. It will show you how many spots are at each specific program and some more info about each one. You are likely seeing that there are 4 spots available at X program and 700 available nationally
