I realize that applying as early as possible is the most beneficial and is what I plan on doing in June '05. My concern is that my undergrad university (Tufts) writes a health committee letter and they don't get sent out till Aug 1, at the earliest.

Should I bypass the committee letter in order to get the recs in earlier in the application period?

What are your thoughts/experiences? Thanks for the insight.

Jeremy,

I hear this sort of thing all the time and it amazes me that pre-professional committees are so slow. They really ought to have a better understanding of the process and know that what they are doing is no favor to you if it isn't done in a timely manner.

August isn't too late, but they key in your post is that August is the EARLIEST the letters get sent out. What is the latest? If things are moving into September, then I'd bypass it. ESPECIALLY if you are working hard to have your AADSAS submitted in June. Waiting for 2-3 months after that for a committee letter doesn't make any sense and would negate the benefits of applying early.

I know that BYU writes their letters up in early spring, and at the time I remember thinking that was a huge pain, but now in hindsight I'm thankful that they were on top of things like they were.
