Hey guys, just wondering if anyone can help me. I am a UK medical student graduating in July 2010 and I was wondering when I should start my application to ERAS. It just dawned on me that certain programs need you to have your medical school transcript (I took that to mean my degree) and if thats the case does it mean that I have to wait a whole year after graduating to apply the following year?

Hope that makes sense and thanks for your help! 👍

It depends on what you mean by "graduating in July 2010".

In order to participate in the 2010 match (results March 2010 to start July 2010), you need to graduate from medical school and be ready to work by July 1st, 2010. So, if you actually graduate in June, then you will be able to participate in the 2010 match. If your grad date is in July, then no.

Even if you grad in June, you will be rushed. You'll need your ECFMG certificate to start, and that requires a copy of your medical diploma and takes at least a few weeks to process. If you need a visa, that requires your ECFMG first, so more delays. Last, most programs actually start in mid June.

As far as the match is concerned, you can participate without your full ECFMG certificate, however some (but not all) programs require a full ECFMG certification to consider interviewing IMG's.

The "transcript" they are talking about in ERAS is your transcript to date. All US students are applying in their final year of school, so an incomplete transcript is no problem (excepting the above issues).

Thanks for the advice, I'm not sure exactly when I graduate in the summer of 2010 now because my university holds its finals in December of the previous term, so that would be 2009 for me. Whether I actually graduate early because of that I don't know, but the exit interviews for residency in the UK is scheduled for end of May. I better just go and find out.

So when do US students graduate?

US students graduate in late May or early June of 2010...and then start residency on July 1st (uniform start date for all residency programs).

What programs start in midJune?
I didn't even know they could do that.
I guess if they had 2 full weeks of orientation?
I think my program had 2-3 days of orientation prior to the 7/1 start date...
Isn't the start date of 7/1 (for clinical duties, not orientation) uniform? correct me if I'm wrong on that.

My orientation (2y ago) started on 6/18 and lasted 4 or 5 days. Clinical duties started one week later. There is no official uniform start date (in spite of 7/1 being the reported start date) and many programs seem to be starting earlier at least by anecdotal SDN reports.

Interestingly, fellowships all seem to start on 7/1 although I have seen a lot of surgical fellows show up early to try to learn the ropes from the graduating fellow before they get thrown to the sharks on 7/1. This year both the new vascular and thoracic fellows did this.

For an IMG it isn't only an issue of when you graduate.
U need ECFMG certificate before u start residency. And having that means having finished all the steps(except step 3 )and your graduation Diploma verified with your university(can take weeks) plus your Final Transcript sent to ECFMG.
And mind you most programmes would strike u off their list if u aren't certified by rank list submission day unless u prove that you have finished all your steps and your certificate is pending. Meaning even if u grad in May it is a Close Call, grad in June complicated, July forget the current year.
In other words unlike American students u probably would have to wait a whole year
