If most programs won't even look at your file until October 1 when the Dean's Letter is uploaded, what's the difference between applying to programs on the 20th vs the 15th, for example? What am I missing?

Many programs look before Dean's letters are out.

It's possible that programs that wait until October MIGHT use the date you actually applied as a deciding factor of whether to interview you or not. This is all rumor, probably untrue.

The #1 reason to apply early is to just get it out of the way. There's a lot of this process that is completely out of your hands at this point (your LORs, your MSPE, what programs are looking for this year compared to last year) that it can be helpful to take control of one of the few things you can...the timing of your app.

Other than that, no, there's no realistic difference between the apps that went out at 12:01 this morning, and those that will go out sometime around lunchtime on Friday.
