Hello,

I am 25 years old and will be taking the MCAT exam on September 1st of this year. I was wondering if it will be too late to apply for next September and if I should start submitting applications now and submit the MCAT score later when I receive it if possible?
Also I want to apply to some Post-bacc programs since my GPA is very low (2.7) so in the likely case I don't get accepted into MD/DO I can follow that route, what are the best times to apply keeping my MCAT date in mind.

Regards

PS: Please no negative comments about my chances, critiqued advice however is welcome.

First of all, you will 100% NOT be accepted with a 2.7 gpa. Also, taking your MCAT in September doesn't leave you a lot of time to study, and will make your application SUPER LATE. I would recommend no taking your MCAT until you have some other plans set up like post-bacc. You have a lot of work today before taking the MCAT should even be part of the discussion. You have a solid two years of gpa repair ahead of you, and if you take the MCAT now, you risk rushing it and it may expire before you ever get to apply.

From what I have heard, waiting for a Sept. MCAT score will make your application very late. The (very) late application compounded with your GPA is not a good combination. Granted, this is all without knowing anything else about your application of course.

This dude has posted multiple application cycles since 2009 basically asking variations of the same thing. People told you to do a post-bacc in 2009, I'm not sure what you've been doing with yourself for the past couple years. I'm don't know if you're just a really weird troll or what...

This guy is going nowhere fast.

You're not going to become a doctor bro.

Lol harsh.

Focus on GPA repair before focusing on the MCAT.

Caribbean/DO/Podiatry.

A 2.7 is going to cripple your chances anywhere.

Thank you for the advice, I will obviously be applying for a few certain MD/DO lower requirement schools in addition to the Caribbean schools. The podiatric option was a good suggestion and I am keeping my options open with post-bacc or 1 year graduate programs to enhance my application.

The past few years I have been working full time paying off my debt, as I faced economic hardships I was working full-time the semesters that I did poorly in and part-time in the semester I did well in. My grades therefore fluctuate intermittently between semesters which can be explained from not being able to attend classes because I had to pay rent/food/etc on my own while taking upper level courses and did my best.
For those who are handed everything by their parents and have an immaculate GPA, congratulations to you I have no hatred towards you, but my circumstances were different.

I have worked at a Caribbean medical school and have learned a lot more about medical school through this experience also I am volunteering and doing research to increase my exposure to the field. I feel that my candidacy for medical school is my well rounded background and overcoming the trails that I have endured; hence my consistency in aiming for my goals regardless of the odds.

Being from Afghanistan, I have faced a lot of undue hatred towards me post-911 and have managed to complete my bachelor's degree in 2009 through sheer persistence and motivation to succeed. I did not take the easiest classes being offered to increase my GPA but rather took more challenging courses in an attempt to learn more and to benefit from my financial investment in college. I believe that my MCAT examination score will indicate the results and fruits of my labors.

Thanks again everyone for the advice or discouragement and the time you have taken out of your life to reply to my questions. 🙂

I hope everything works out well for you and you achieve your goals. That being said, your comment about "those who are handed everything by their parents and have an immaculate GPA," comes off as a little hypocritical in the sense that it seems as though you are saying only you have had to overcome hardships and that no one else has had to work hard to achieve good grades or whatever. Granted your situation may have been more difficult than most, but the way you said that seems to diminish everyone else's accomplishments. Many pre-med students have to work during college and support themselves.

Just how it came off to me.

Good luck to you though.

You CANNOT get into a US MD or DO school with a 2.7 there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

a lot of people have sad stories in their background. a 2.7 is a 2.7 whichever way you look at it. no amount of hardship or unfairness is going to make an adcom look the other way. sorry.

Being a below-avg stat guy myself I know how discouraging other people's analysis can be sometimes. However, I have always wanted people to "give it to me straight" and not sugarcoat things. If you can sift through some of the seemingly personal attacks here, I think that you will find that we are giving our honest assessments of your situation.

That being said, if you want to be doctor then do not make excuses and do whatever you can to improve your chances. I'm not ready to say you can't, but from here on out you will continue to have an uphill battle. it will probably be more difficult of a path than 99% of the people here and that's what you have to realize. Just be real with your chances.

Good luck.

i think if you are that strapped for money, you should just apply Caribbean and podiatry, if you score well on your step 1, and make yourself a competitive candidate for residency, you have a chance of coming back to the states and doing your residency in the states.

Take a look at the last application. The applicant had a 2.74 GPA and was accepted to at least one medical school... so it's not 100% impossible.

Where are the sources for that information? I could type up the exact same thing in word. The minimum cut off is a 3.0 and that's a hard line...so the file you attached seems either outdated or complete BS. Also, doesn't say where they got into school, or what country...just saying.

The source is right here on SDN. It's called Kaplan's Medical School Insider, the link is here:

The example applications were found here:
http://www.kaptest.com/MCAT/Home/med-insider.html

It was dated 2012 so its up to date. There is a 2 hour recording where adcoms explain the successes and failures of the example applicants. The 2.74 applicant included.

I wanted to let you guys know I am open to Caribbean schools, puerto rico, post-Bacc programs. I will probably apply to two US MD schools, two DO schools, two Caribbean schools, and a few different post-bacc programs. I should hopefully get into one of them and go from there.
Kudos for keeping the negativity low this time and wish you all the best with your own applications 🙂

Applying MD/DO is probably a bad idea. There's a good chance you won't be accepted, and when you apply the next time around, you'll be seen as a reapplicant. The bar will be higher then.

A sub 3.0 won't get in.

The 2.7 must've been some crazy combination of circumstances; URM, underprivileged, crazy life story, all in one package.
