Nationwide, the number of people applying to dental schools has declined since the most recent peak in 1997 (8,602 applicants in 1997, 6,362 in 2001). http://dental.pacific.edu/admissions1/student_profiles.htm

Does anyone know what the applicant volume in more recent years is?

the last i heard it was around 12-13 thousand, in other words 97 doesn't even compare. this year is the most competitive year of all time!!!

Have a look at figure 1. In the mid '70s there were close to 17,000 applicants.

I'm not sure how they measure the applicants, though. Does that mean they were applying for the 2004-2005 schools year?
