Applications are down this year (2021-2022)

Virtual interviews are the wave of the future.
Even outside of med school interviews. Before covid, most final round job interviews took place in an office for a half or full day. Literally the worst. Personally, I actually kind of preferred getting to see the med schools and meeting students in person but obviously wasn’t worth the expense. I was also in undergrad first time I applied so work wasn’t really a factor.

Yes meeting the med students gives you a good idea about the school's culture and whether or not you'll be a good fit. I am glad that you got in this cycle. I'm not completely familar with your story but I know that some things were difficult (as they are for us all). Congrats and best of luck with your future endeavors!
