Hi,

I am finishing up with the first semester of my sophomore year. Can I apply after spring semester of Sophomore Year for dental schools? How likely would my chances be to get in?

I heard you cant apply until you have 90 credits? or something like that?

After next spring semester, i will have 65 credits. My overall GPA currently is 3.64 (not including this semester).

After spring,I will have completed ALL of the Pre-Dental requirements, EXCEPT Physics, which I was planning on doing Junior year.

I am planning to take my DATs this summer. So, any ideas? comments? suggestions?

My dentist graduated from UIC in 1995, and he got in after sophomore year. This is what he recommended me doing. I'm sure A LOT has changed since then, and the competition has gotten tougher. Regardless, I would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

With a 3.6 if you do well on the dat you will get accepted to plenty of schools. Most schools do require 90 hours, but you only need that by the time you enroll, not when you apply. Because you apply to schools a year before you attend, you will have the 90 hours anyway. Many schools require that your undergrad school be willing to give you a degree after your first year of dental school, so you may want to check into that.

Good Luck.

I see.

How about not having finished one of the pre-dental requirements (Physics)?

Do I have to have that finished before I apply, or could I be in the process of taking that class as I apply?

Lastly, when do you guys think would be the best time to apply, knowing all the info I have given?

It is perfectly fine to take it after you apply. They do require you finish the class(es) with satisfactory grades prior to starting dental school though. I would also say it would help to have them done by the end of fall semester preceeding the start date for dental school. I applied in June and hadn't completed a few requirements. I finished two during the summer and finished up the last one this semester. You will need to fax the schools a pseudo-official grade sheet and have your school send them new transcripts with the necessary grades.

If you are willing to sacrifice a year of undergrad, easily the most fun/responsibility free years of your life (something I would not have been willing to do), then....go for it. Sounds like you have the grades and determination for it. Keep your GPA where its at and do well on the DAT and you should be fine.
