Wondering if I can buy myself more time to make my final specialty decision by applying to two different specialties (that I am interested in) and then only going on interviews for one (i.e., decide after interviews come in rather than next week). I have upcoming rotations in both specialties. As a related question, how long does one generally have to make decisions re: interviews after being offered?

Preemptively:
- I am not looking for opinions on how I should have figured this out by now/earlier
- I am aware this is possible, but I am wondering if this is ill advized primarily becuase I would be interested in the same institutions for each specialty.
- I realize it would be best to not INTERVIEW for different programs at the same institution(s)

Thanks in advance

It's definitely been done. I have even known people who have interviewed in two specialties (namely surgery and medicine). I am pretty sure they even interviewed at the same institutions. I do think they kept their dual-application status on the down low though.

Probably depends largely on what the specialties are. If you're thinking about applying for two tightly-linked programs, that might be a bit risky... but if you're applying for completely different specialties, it's unlikely that anybody will ever find out.

I applied psych and anesthesiology but never at the same program. im thinking about applying to both at some places now...
