I received a dismal score of 22O (6 Phys, 8 Verb, 8 Bio) on the MCAT, much lower than expected. I have a cGPA of 3.5 with decent/good extracurriculars and LORs.

Do I apply to schools now, or receive another MCAT score and apply then (~3 months from now)? Thanks

Retake it. I don't even think DO schools will accept anyone with less than a 7 or 8 in any single section.

It will be re-taken, but do I apply to schools prior or after receiving the new score?

I'm not sure if you can apply MD route this cycle, since the timeline will be disadvantageous. 3 months from now will put you into September, which won't benefit you at schools with rolling admissions.

i suggest you retake the mcat and possibly wait a year to boost your app like your gpa for instance and get some more EC's. there is no need to rush the app cycle. good luck

first things first - don't rush the mcat because the next time you take it - you want to indicate that the first score was just bad luck. so don't rush to take if 7 weeks from now if you don't think that's enough. second, you obviously did something fundamentally wrong. figure out what that is! was your actual score different from your practice tests? if so, maybe a little readjustment and a few months of practice will fix it.

if you can take the test by late july, i think you should try to apply (fyi - this is 2 weeks past what my school says - that app should be submitted no later than july 15 - i'm suggest a little more time since you're trying to improve mcat). at worst you'll lose some money but at best you'll save a year's time. but again - only if 7 weeks is enough to improve. don't rush it. i don't know how signfiicant the "stigma" is for a reapplicant in the eyes of the adcom. you can show your improved mcat and maybe some additional volunteering during that extra year.

now i'm not sure if this is a good idea, but i suggest you wait a few weeks to submit the app. i wouldn't want them to look at your app without the new mcat score. i hear if you tell them you're retaking they'll wait but i'm nervous about getting prejudged with the first score. moreover, you're not sure if you will be able to raise the score in time. until you don't know, don't commit to applying imo. you can talk to your schools and make sure they're willing to wait, after you think you can in fact apply this cycle.

whether you apply or not, ontinue to study for the mcat and try finish it by september. this'll make use of what you studied already. if you try this in march, what you studied up to now will be forgotten.

sorry didn't realize you said you need 3 months. glad you're taking your time. i think the real question is - what is the drawback of being a reapplicant? take the mcat by september, do better, apply late. best thing - you get in. worst - you lose some money and are a reapp. next time you can cite early application and some extra volunteering. 3.5 is not bad and raising gpa costs $$$ so i'd rather work on the mcat. i'll still try to apply late this summer - even if that means a low chance of success. the only downer is if you have particular locations in mind. for example, i want to stay near my family so if applying late means i have to move away 6 states - that would suck. i'd rather give up 1 year but live close. see if that applies to you.

Well you can always consider applying next app cycle... Unless your ready to retake it now.

Retake, get at least a 30, apply next year.

in a similar boat. I'm retaking the mcat in aug, giving it a shot, and still applying this year. Cuz for me, I would rather not lose a yr. good luck! :luck:

I wish they offered the MCAT more times in June and July and less in September because obviously that's late for the current application year and only good for sophomores that take the MCAT a year early.

Ultimately, there are millions of people in your position and I wish them and myself good luck because it's going to be one crazy summer.

If schools get my new score early September, is this too late to be decently competitive? Around what time does the "window" of being accepted begin coming to a hault?

yup, it's pretty much late by then but if you feel really confident, then go ahead however, i wont advice it. rushing the app cycle will do you more harm than good.

take a look at this.

https://www.aamc.org/download/157450/data/table24-mcatgpagridall2008-10.pdf.pdf

you have a less than 17% chance getting in. But, if you can bring that MCAT up to 30-32 it jumps up to 55% and if you you can get it between 33-35 it is greater than 67% chance you get into at least one school (assuming you apply broadly and within reasonable range (e.g. not Harvard)).

And think it about this way too, a 24 (8/section) is approximately average score for those who take the MCAT, but for those who apply and get in its closer the 30.

Btw, going from a 24 to a 30 is a lot easier than going for a 30 to a 36. SO bunker down study harder (take a class with the princeton review) and take the MCAT again. The class may cost a lot but if it helps you get in, it will be worth it right?

IF you had a score closer to 30, and IF you only needed 1 month extra to study... THEN I would suggest adding one school you don't really care about to your primary, in order to get your transcript verified. Then you could add the rest of your schools once you got your new MCAT.

However, in your case, you absolutely should wait until next cycle. Your GPA is borderline, your current MCAT is way off the mark, and you may need more than just three months to bring it up. Your best shot would be applying early, which is too late for this cycle.

You are not competitive for admission to a US medical school at this time. I'd suggest taking a year off and retaking the MCAT.

Moving to WAMC.
