Just got my MCAT scores back and I did worse than expected. I was averaging 27 on AAMC exams straight 9's.

I got a 9PS 7VB 7BS= 23N Total.

Cumulative GPA of 3.09
Science GPA of 3.6

President of premed club, 160 volunteer hours in hospital, shadowed DO, student mentor, worked as a chemistry tutor for 3 years for college chem dept. Upward trends in transcript.

I am a 1st generation college student.

Should i retake MCAT in January and wait another year and retake some courses?

Or is there any DO school that I may have a shot at an interview? i have already submitted primary application and i do not know whether to submit (waste money) secondaries.

There are 2/3 new DO schools that will have their opening classes next year such as CAMPBELL and others, should i send secondaries to them? or any other DO schools?

plz help

Are you an UR?

Whats UR?

I'm assuming they meant URM - meaning a minority (more likely to have slightly less than average stats get in). If you are a minority, yes submit some apps.

The only thing that's kinda iffy is your MCAT - while your cGPA is lower your sGPA is high. Have u already submitted your primary? If not, I'd probably recommend you wait till next year and retake your MCAT in the winter/spring. If you have, maybe you can squeak by at a few schools if you already have some secondaries. However, in my honest opinion, if u were getting higher on ur practice tests, u can do better on the real thing. Study better/more/different for this next one and really rock it, and apply early next year and u should be fine if you bump ur MCAT up a few points. Good luck!

I am Asian (over represented in medicine) but i do qualify as being economically disadvantaged with low income. I have already submitted a primary app to 28 schools (basically all of them) lol... and I have like 15 secondaries waiting for me. however, i do not want to just throw money down the toilet by submitting secondaries and not getting any invites. i am leaning towards retaking the mcat in january. i know i can do better but its just the long wait time that is making me a bit desperate for this cycle.

i have a bs in biology w/ honors, with neurophysiology research experience and 2nd author of a manuscript submitted to The European journal of Neuroscience.

i really appreciate your input. thank you 🙂

You're about a standard deviation below your cGPA and MCAT for people of your race. At minimum, you will need to retake that MCAT, preferably do retakes and attain a 3.2 cGPA.

Do NOT apply to Campbell. They are screening at 3.2. You might get lucky with Alabama or Marian.

I would just apply next cycle with a rockstar MCAT and have your pick of the litter. 1 year is nothing in the long run and right now, you are not competitive.

Apply June 1st next cycle.

Thank you all for the input... I live in NYC so there are no scheduled MCAT exams before January and I will retake some courses and do better on the MCAT and reapply June 1st.

Will I need new letters of recommendations or will the old ones suffice so long as the date is changed?

If less than 2 years old, should still be good to go. If > 2 years, I would update the date

I have a 23 MCAT and have 3 upcoming interviews. So it's possible with that score, but you'll need awesome ECs. The cGPA is what may hurt you (as some schools screen at minimum 3.2, for example). I think one of the main concerns is that you're submitting your secondaries later than many people. Those stats may not have been so bad if you would have submitted your secondaries in July or even early August. But by now a lot of IIs have already been given out. It's not impossible to get in with those stats, but it's going to be difficult. Good Luck!

You need to retake mcat, retake some classes to get you GPA up and maybe rack in some more volunteer hours

LOL Economically disadvantaged!! Thats like $2000 dollars in application fees alone (including secondaries) I must be SEVERELY disadvantaged considering I could only afford to send out about 6 apps and had to borrow money
