If you defer acceptance from a school for a year, can you apply to other schools during that year?

AFAIK, the answer is a big fat, "No." You would have to withdraw.

Plus, you usually have to explain why you want to defer your admission by a year. I think you can imagine how the "I don't really want to go to your crap school, but it's better than nothing if I don't have any luck elsewhere" will pan out with the application comittee.

AAMC will keep track of this stuff, and schools talk- you can get in lots of trouble for this, lose your acceptance, and not get any consideration at other schools.

If the purpose is just to work elsewhere for a year, why the F are you applying again? You're already in med school. Geez. First, you're trying to do something that the AAMC does not condone, and second, you're not admitting to being conniving even when it's blatantly obvious.

I am very excited to have been accepted into medical school. The reason I would like to work for a year is a financial issue, and I would like to be able to re-apply to my state school for financial reasons as well.

I have no sympathy either. You have already wasted the schools time and money, as well as causing some poor soul grief over not getting in or trying to get in off a waitlist. If you didn't get into state the first time, you should be happy you got in somewhere. And work for financial reasons? That makes no sense, you just postpone income for yet anoterh year, and with $38k in federal loans at your disposal, how could you need anymore for med school.

I read somewhere that Harvard will actually let you do this - defer and apply to other schools. Why would you do that, though? It could have been a lie.

It seems like you guys are kind of being ruff on miragesea. Maybe I don't know the whole situation, but it sounds like miragesea would go to the school she's been accepted at, its just not her first choice. If the school allows her to apply to other schools (there are schools that actually allow you apply to other schools), I think she should. Why not?
Personally I deferred this last year to train for the Olympic Trials. Now, I don't expect everyone to agree with me that training for the Trials is worth putting off medical school for a year, but people have different values. If miragesea chooses to defer, I can't see why anyone should take offense to her decision? If she defers someone will get her spot for the year. If I'm way off on this, please rationally explain it to me, I'd be interested to hear a good argument.

Deferrals are trickier than they seem. You can only get a deferal from a school after you've already committed to going and specifically asked for a deferall which you almost always have to justify with a valid reason. Not too bad right? Not done yet, in order to regain admission for the next year, most schools will make you fill out specialized school specific AMCAS again basically applying in an early decision type format. This is just like the AMCAS application they give to students in accelerated BS/MD programs after undergrad but before enrolling at med schools, (people who aren't really applying for admission, like at Northwestern, Case, SUNY's, UMDNJ, etc) You don't even need a PS or those 15 ec's, they just need the stats from AMCAS for all matriculants. Essentially, you really wouldn't get an opportunity to apply again while holding an admission.
I have heard of a couple cases where people deferred DO school acceptances to apply to MD schools. I've seen other cases where people left a DO school after 1 year because they were able to gain admission to MD schools, but you start over as an MS1. Finally, some schools accept transfers usually after 2nd year before clinical rotations, so you could possibly look into that.

Deferring in order to train for the olympic trials is not the same as what the OP is trying to accomplish. First of all MOST medical schools will not allow her to defer to THEN attempt to apply again to gain acceptance in X or Y medical school (this is frowned upon by most medical schools but not all). This is why it is very important to not apply hodge podge everywhere because guess what? you may only get into ONE school. If the ONLY school that accepts you it not your cup of tea then why did you apply there in the first place? Remember getting into medical school is very difficult and then deferring to do this again is plane insane because there are NO GUARANTEES that she will get in the second go round....
