Applying as a Sophomore (Unique Circumstance)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So you took classes in the BS/MD program... but did it end or were you kicked out?..I don’t get the whole story, sorry. Or you’d rather do MD at a different school?

If I were you I would take another year to increase the GPA. You have a great mcat score, but being a sophomore might slightly negatively impact your application. But hey, if you think you can get into a medical school give it a shot, you never know what will happen with that great mcat score.

The score will not make up for the low gpa and adcoms seeing them as 'simply too young'. Maybe DO would shake out, but MD is a reach at this age, GPA, and level of shadowing/volunteer experiences they likely have.

Blaming a program for a low GPA, still talking about being a high school valedictorian, mentioning your SAT...I think adcoms could have issues with both the stats and the mindset.

I would take more time, both to increase your chances and also to get mentally prepared for what medical school will require.

So most of the students in the program are underperforming? How many made the cut(out of the 20 you said were in it)? It sounds like it’s not that prestigious if the selected students don’t measure up. Forget about being valedictorian(lots of people were), perfect SAT/ACT scores( again lots have them). You probably should stay and work on your study skills and GPAs for a year. It would also give you a year to work on your ECs.

Thanks for the reply! Well basically the program underwent a shift in administration (transition stage). Not blaming it on the program, but a large majority of those accepted failed to meet the requirements. I skipped a grade also so I would be applying at 19. As far as maturity, I truly feel age is just a number and maturity comes with experience. Thank you so much for your input!
So you got kicked out of the program or...?? You still didn't really answer why you want to apply to other MD or DO programs now instead of continuing on a path you're already on.

We're only made aware of our status in the program after the third year. Yet, because I feel that I will not make the cut off, I was considering applying this cycle elsewhere!

Yeah you might feel that way, but what's important is how admission committees feel about it. Other people have gotten in at your age, but there's a reason older students and non-trads have had more success than people of your age when applying.

For SDN to give you better advice on if you're someone who can be successful when applying this early, it might be helpful to describe the organization you started (and when), how long you've been involved in research and if you've been on any publications, when you became a CNA and if it's an all-year thing or you took the class in June 2017 and did it for July and August..

Maybe consider it this way... if the program which has put you through all this rough stuff and knows what you've been taught and knows how you rank compared to other people in that program is not going to let you continue for everything they have already put efforts in setting you up for, will programs outside it who don't know that you may in fact be at an average or above average GPA in that program let you in? Something to think about.
