Anybody applying that has small children? Or in vet school with small children? How has your experience been so far? How are you planning on handling everything if/when you get in?

I'm a single mother applying my daughter is 10. I am hoping to get in here but if not will consider SGU. Anyone there with children?

I'm currently a third year, and my kids are freshly 5 (birthday last week) and 3.5. We had them both while I was doing my undergrad, so I was kinda used to the stress and pressure of school with young kids. Had a gap year where I worked nights in a laboratory before starting vet school. Between that and my previous career I was pretty used to functioning on minimal rest.

My class is pretty cool with my kids. I have them around school pretty often, and they love coming to see where I spend so much of my time and catching glimpses of animals. I've got 3 other classmates that have small kids too. It does take away some of my time that I'd have to be active in clubs or wetlabs and stuff like that. And I'm usually starting to study when alot of my classmates might be getting ready for bed. I've made a great group of supportive friends that are amazing at group studying, sharing resources, etc. They've really made my time so much easier. So I guess having kids in vet school can best when youve got a good support system

I'm terrified of it. I am attending SGU this year and my husband is still in residency for Emergency medicine with 6 months left to go. We have a 17 month old baby that may be coming with me to the island until my husband finishes residency. I have no idea how I am going to juggle it all for 6 months without family or my spouse.

Wow that’s definitely a lot to handle! I couldn’t imagine juggling all of that! But I’m sure you’ll manage and do well in Vet School. Don’t let it get to you

I wouldn't take a 17 month old to the island. These places regularly lose power/water/have short supplies because all products are shipped in, nothing made on the island. Can't take child to school, will have to figure out child care in a third world country. Crime is high. I know people who lost classmates from murder. Many were mugged multiple times. It really isn't the safest of places for even an adult, but I wouldn't put a child in that situation. I'd defer admission before ever taking a child to the island. Just something to consider

Thanks for the heads up! I actually decided a while back to have my parents care for him while I did school because I was worried about safety. But still good to know.
