So I've completed my AMCAS application and have gotten some secondaries although I applied a little late. I wasn't planning on applying DO but how would I look if I was to complete the AACOMAS in the next week? I'm starting to panic about no interview invites from the MD schools and I don't want to spend the next year not doing anything worthwhile.

Would the verification time not even make it worth it? If it matters, my MCAT is probably average to slightly above average and my GPA is slightly above for the schools I'd apply to.

Edit: I just realized I would need to have my letters uploaded to interfolio for AACOMAS, right? That might not be so easy since the pre-med committee would be out for break. 🙁

Send the money to me instead. I'll put it to better use.

Letters don't go to AACOMAS, they go to individual schools. AACOMAS doesn't have their own central letter service.

if you have excellent stats, you may have a chance.

What are your stats and when did you actually apply? The people sitting in your shoes are the same ones applying DO right now so the competition is drastically ramped up and a 3.6/28 isn't going to get the same love now as in June.

In all honesty it would be a complete waste of time, since you haven't even sent your primaries in yet. It takes almost 6 weeks for verification (you're looking at verification in the end of January/beginning of February at best). Then you have to get secondaries which may or may not be sent to you right away, some have a central screening process. So you'd be getting your secondaries throughout February MAYBE only to apply for interviews that may or may not already be filled. Like the user said above unless you have GREAT stats, you probably won't hear anything and you will be wasting money. My answer would have been different had this post been 2 months ago, but the end of December is seriously too late to send in a primary.

If you decide to apply now do it now. I believe AACOMAS has a deadline sometime the last week of January? Most DO schools have a deadline of March-May, but some do stop in January.

Please don't apply DO because you'll have nothing to do for a year. Apply because you actually want to be a DO.

Good point. DEFINITELY agree.

Well chances are that if I don't get in this year, I'll be applying MD + DO next year. If I have a chance at DO now, I might as well do that instead of waiting a year.

MD/DO doesn't matter to me, I just want to be a doctor anyways.

I applied with like a 3.75/27 in August so my chances weren't very good to start with. I figured I would improve my MCAT and add a few DO schools the next cycle if I didn't get in, but I'm starting to get worried about a year off and what I'm going to do.

I guess I was more or less telling you to save your money; but if that isn't really an issue then go for it. Also, not to be argumentative, but if it didn't matter whether your were an MD or DO, then why didn't you send out AACOMAS when you sent out AMCAS? It obviously had to matter a little...

No gonna lie. It's probably too late. DO schools don't mean nearly automatic acceptance. While DO schools have more spots, there's less of them, so I wouldn't count on them just waiting for an application. Trust me, there's plenty of people actively seeking out those spots. Once November hit, a good chunk of the KCOM class was filled for next year, for example. And currently I believe they are close to being filled.

Applying to MD with that MCAT was not wise. The average matriculant to MD is around 32 these days. i would suggest concentrating fully on DO schools next year and apply to a few MD schools..like in-state ones or Caribbean.

OP, you probably might still have a small shot if you submitted your AACOMAS right now since that would mean you would be submitting your secondaries in February and getting interviews in March or later. However with the current circumstances of Interfolio/your pre-med committee it may be too late.

It also depends if you have the funds to spend money on apps with just a small chance of getting an interview/acceptance.

so i had the exact same dilemma about a month and a half ago..i decided to just do it (that was early november) and was verified within a month and started receiving secondaries last week. i think you still have a chance! if you have the money, go for it

I was in a similar situation last year. I submitted my primary application in November (earlier than you would be now) and it was way too late. Received a lot of secondaries but most classes were already close to being full. Huge waste of money. Apply EARLY next Summer and you'll be fine. Probably not what you're looking to hear but you would most likely being throwing your money out the window. Good luck to you!

Edit: I think it'll take longer than a week to finish the AACOMAS.

I wish we had non-rolling admissions.

Apply if your stats are good you will get in. Early application is mostly for weak/borderline candidates, If you are good you will get in. Try ACOM and other newer colleges they are looking for good students.

The OP is a decent candidate but its pretty late in the cycle to be applying now, even to the new schools. Its a safe bet to assume most classes are full. I'd rather just wait another year.

In response to everything, i sent out my AMCAS and AACOMAS applications at the same time and it took 6 weeks for aacomas to verify, and then an additional 2 weeks (for some schools to get out secondaries)

I applied with a 25q and 3.32 sGPA and got an interview at KU-SOM

If your TRULY interested in DO and the osteopathic philosophy & medicine and want to learn more about it, read this book by Bob Jones, D.O. (its a quick read) and very good, heres the link; http://www.okosteo.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=46

I was accepted to LMU-DCOM and they have a little under half of their seats remaining, but there is no wait time on the secondary, so start it now and send it out before your aacomas gets verified (longest 6 week wait of my life)

Furthermore, if you want to apply D.O. make sure you have shadowed a D.O. and/or get one to write you a Letter of Recommendation, thats required by literally every D.O. school in the nation, (or at least the 7 that I applied to)

Good luck and keep your hopes up, its never too late, but competition gets stiffer after the new years.

Cheers

P.S. One of my friends was accepted to a Caribbean school and they told him he had to get a 16 on his MCAT to get in....needles to say I was in disbelief........

Most DO schools will just require you to get any doctor's LOR, though a few will specifically ask for a DO LOR, however a few also allow some leway, i.e Lecom apparently let one of their students after the interview shadow a DO and get a LOR.

The smartest thing I ever did was apply MD and DO once, and simultaneously.

Unfortunately you are unlikely to benefit from this strategy at this point. DO schools are big on rolling admissions.

A 16?

LOL that's a composite score of something like 5/6/5.

I could roll out of bed three years ago with a massive hangover and do better than that.

I took the MCAT months ago.....pretty much have forgotten everything....and I think I could also pull a higher score than 16 right now.
