applying early that important?

I have a less than average gpa and everybody is telling me to apply early. I know the admissions is on a rolling basis but is there a huge difference between applying in June and in August? I wanted to take some summer classes to boost my gpa. This semester and next semester I am retaking classes and wanted to use next summer for some graduate level courses. They won't make much difference in my gpa but will demonstrate academic ability. So, basically, is it that important to apply at the beginning?

technically, rules of thumb, it really helps those who are borderline to get interviews, so yes, it is an advantage to complete early
