Hey guys, i just recently took the DAT and i am planning on applying early to schools in the 2009 cycle. i was wondering what the benefits are of applying early? if you apply early you get looked at first, but dont schools send out secondaries and interviews in november/december? so why does it matter? i mean when they send out their acceptances after interviewing havnt they looked at basically all of the applicants and know which ones they are going to accept? My gpa is a 3.7 and DAT scores are AA 19, TS 19, PAT 21.

Those who apply early are the first that are looked at. Those who apply late are the last to be looked at. When you are applying late they are comparing you to everyone else the have in their pool. When you apply early you aren't up against so many... Different gene pool!

Some schools have you send you secondary at the same time as you apply. Interview dates depend on the schools. I had 2 interviews in August and found out about them early July.

Schools look at the early applicants a little different, well some schools do, and some school look at them a little more favorable.

Fact of the matter is if you want to increase you chances of getting in, applying early sure helps!

Apply early = Accepted early 😀

Apply early and save yourself a HUGE amount of anxiety and depression. Trust me, when it's January and you only have one acceptance to an expensive school, you won't be able to function properly (because of all the waiting). At least, that's what's happening with me.🙁

Dude wats ure stats like and where have u gotton acceptance?

At UMKC they send you an invitation to interview and a secondary (if chosen) as soon as they receive your application materials. I finished applying by early june and had an interview invitation and secondary in hand by early august. My interview was in September and I had an acceptance on December 1st. My friend didn't finish applying until late august and got an interview invitation, but only late interviews were left so she didn't get to interview in time to be accepted on Dec. 1st. She is now competing for 10 spots with 100 other people. Applying early sometimes makes all the difference!

Glad I applied early. Some of the state schools fill up their classes early so if the application is late, the applicant will be taking himself/herself out of the running from such schools. Only private schools will be the option then.

Why don't you submit two applications - one early and one late. Tell us how each goes. You may have to legally change your name or something to submit a second application. It would be an interesting project for you.

The biggest piece of advice anyone will give you about applying to dental school is: Apply Early!

Some advice in life isn't meant to be questioned, just obeyed.

the one reason i can see to apply early was that if there was some sort of an error or mistake, it could be caught early, rectified in time, and you can get an early interview...here on sdn you'll see posts of OMG its november and i was just found out that my app isn't complete...blah blah blah...avoid that if you can... i sorta feel bad for these ppl, then again, i don't....stay on top of your ****....then you dont want to be those ppl who... i applied in october, was complete in november, got an interview in december, OMG what are my chances...XYZ schools is full and my interview is next week....again, stay on top of your ****
:boom:

Apply early! Trust, it's the best thing you can do. Schools look at applications on a first come, first served basis. Would you rather be interviewed when there are zero seats filled and schools are more willing to be a bit flexible with their selection? Or would you rather be considered when a school has just about filled their entire class and are knit picking through the final thousands of applications for the very, very best of the remainding applicants to give their final seats to? At that point you could potentially get edged out by a kid who has only has few extra hours in EC's than you. How would you feel then? Then again, if you apply late and they have already filled their class before getting to your application you're gonna be singing that "only if I had applied earlier" song. A 4.0 GPA and 20's all over the DAT will leave you in the same situation as someone with a 1.8 GPA and a 14 DAT if the application is really late. Reapplying for next cycle! Don't play yourself. Apply early. I did.😀
