applying EDP for M.D. School. Can I also apply D.O.?

So I am reapplying this year (only got on the waitlist at one school last year). I applied pretty late last time. I dont want to do that again because I know the earlier the better.

I am applying EDP to my top choice school. If you're applying EDP with AMCAS, you cannot apply to any other schools and the school I am applying to will let me know their decision by Oct. 1st at the latest at which point I can apply to other schools if I am not accepted and rolled into regular decision.

My question is, can I go ahead and apply to D.O. schools even though I am doing EDP at a M.D. School? I feel as though sending my applications in Oct 1st is kind of late.

I feel as though it shouldn't be a problem since any decision made by a D.O. school would not be binding. Anyone have any experience with this?

I haven't heard of anyone doing this, but I don't see why it would be a problem, since AACOMAS is distinct from AMCAS. You should read through the rules carefully, or maybe even e-mail an MD school about this (maybe not your top choice school, but another MD school) and see what they say.

If you read the information on the AAMC website, it says you can only apply to one "US MD Program" if you apply via early decision. Go ahead and apply to DO programs now.

I just called AMCAS and asked about this.
They told me you are not allowed to apply to DO schools either!
tough break...I would have done the same thing if I had a competitive enough app though, and if it was legit.

you can call and ask yourself if you need further clarification though. Their number is 202-828-0600.

well if you don't feel confident about applying to EDP, apply to D.O. also! why not? AMCAS is not gonna investigate your AACOMAS application.

But you should feel confident since you are applying EDP, right? then don't apply to D.O. save some money, go buy some ice cream or something. 👍

Thanks for actually calling them. I'll prob still apply before Oct. 1st but I'll wait a little bit after my AMCAS goes in. Maybe after the EDP interview?

It was my original plan until I got my mcat score back. It isn't technically allowed, but like others said, nobody will check. Its kind of like the volunteer hours for the applications. Its an honor system with certain things.

Then why does it say on AAMC's website

"Applicants Agree:

NOT to apply through the EDP if they have already submitted an initial or secondary application (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) to a U.S. allopathic medical school for a M.D. degree program for the current entering class."

well...i agree the wording definitely leads you to think otherwise. I have researched the topic at great length as well and supposed that an EDP app was not violated by applying to DO schools.
however, i was explicitly told otherwise when I called AMCAS.
im not saying don't do it.
im just saying AMCAS told me they did not allow it.
it's up to the person applying to decide whether or not they can "get away with it."

I researched into doing this thoroughtly last year and, as MattOglesby said, determined it was not appropriate or an accepted thing to do. Several websites of the schools will actually say not to apply to any other professional programs if you apply to their EDP. No one may ever find out but it would be quite a dishonorable thing to do, IMHO.

Is there even that big a benefit to applying EDP? From what I understood, it was for extremely qualified applicants to get the process done ASAP, and there wasn't really any particular benefit to applying EDP vs. regular decision for your typical applicant.

If your stats are good enough such that you're applying to both MD and DO (and suspect you could be successful at MD) then you might be ok submitting your AACOMAS in early October and completing your secondaries in November. That's a substantial risk, but that was approximately my timeline (I even got some secondaries done as late as late-December) but I have strong stats.

I'd do a careful cost-benefit analysis of the EDP. For the record, I was waitlisted and then rejected again by both allopathic schools who did the same for me in my first round. So nothing's guaranteed to change.

EDP just depends on the school. I was going to apply to FSU's because, outside of my grades, I am their ideal candidate. Interest in more rural area, resident of an undeserved area, etc. My MCAT was just not up to snuff, so I scratched it and am applying regular to get more applications out. If you wanted to apply EDP to UCF then you need stats that'd make you beyond competitive at other schools. (I think they wanted a 3.8 gpa or something)
