Hi everyone,

I am applying for psychiatry residency as well as a rotating internship. The latter is due to my late application (this week I will submit my ERAS) plus my late comlex step 2's (taking them late december). In case I don't match into any psych programs this year, I can atleast match into a rotating internship and then apply as a stronger candidate next year (as well as applying early instead of late).

My question is, Is this even possible? Please excuse my lack of knowledge in this scenario. Could use any help I can get. Thank you!

If they are both allopathic match, yes. If you apply to a DO rotating internship, that match will occur prior to the allopathic psych match, and you will be forced to withdraw your application from the allopathic psych match after you match into a DO rotating internship.

thanks for the reply...

Can I apply for the allopathic internships then, as a backup if I dont match psychiatry programs of my choice? How would the rank list work then...1 to 10 are all the psych programs i want, and then the rest are the internships?

Also, are these internships (rotating or traditional) as hard to get into as a residency (psych in this case)?

This is getting a little beyond what I know, because I know there are allopathic programs that take DOs and fulfill the DO requirements, typically family medicine ones. This would be something you'd have to explore program by program. But yes, you'd just rank the psych programs, and then rank the internship programs

Some of them are, some of them aren't. Typically, the cushier ones in cities near large tertiary care centers are competitive, because people matching into competitive specialties that do not have internship years will opt to have an easier year at Chill Community Hospital before their three years just down the road at Pound Me in The Bottom Ear, Nose, Throat, Skin, Eyes and Gas Hospital.

thanks for the helpful advice. I guess worst comes to worst I can always scramble into a psych spot or an internship...I just hope that its not a messy ordeal, as I dont have to fly cross country or anything, or do they have phone interviews for scramble matches?
