Hi I heard that we can apply for chief resident positions at residency programs other than the one I am in now. is there a website that posts the available positions? How do I find out whats available?

if that is true(I havent ever seen such a thing), that's a stupid and ridiculous idea. the biggest thing a chief resdent does is use their knowledge of the workings of their program(as someone who has trained in it for 2 to 5 whole years) to get their job done. A chief resident who comes on the job not familar with their program would be a complete disaster. It would be the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

Perhaps, but it's not hard to imagine that some programs have difficulty finding enough of their residents that want to stay an extra year. Someone's gotta make those schedules and listen to residents complain.

The way a lot of IMG heavy programs in NYC do it is to hold out the promise of a guaranteed in-house cards or GI fellowship the next year for people who do the chief year. The unspoken flip side to that is that if you don't become the chief and apply for fellowship "on schedule" they'll blackball your app and you'll go unmatched. Saw it several times (in both directions) while I was in med school.
