I've heard that HuMed accepts primarily people from top Ivys. My undergraduate institution is small and private and fairly well regarded, but it's not in the top 10 or anything. I hope this doesn't hold me back...

I'm currently a freshman; 4.0 for this semester and ~3.98 in high school. I got a 33 on my ACT (36 reading, 36 writing, 35 science, 25 math). I graduated from an arts high school, where I was heavily involved with theatre, creative writing, and art-science bridging leadership (purposely vague...); I am going to major in English in college; I will be doing science research this summer.

Stats-wise, it seems like I'm right in there. I also have a pretty strong humanities background. I just basically wanted to know if it was going to break me that I don't come from an Ivy. Thanks so much!

It won't "break you" if you don't come from an Ivy. Past HuMeds have come from institutions such as: WashU, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Pomona College, Middlebury, Wellesley, Wesleyan, UChicago, Amherst, Williams, Barnard, City University of New York, and a handful of state schools. I would say that public schools are conspicuously underrepresented, though (a very small number of public school acceptances in the last few years).

Thank you to you both!! Hopefully my undergrad institution can hold its weight when I apply next year 🙂

Catalystik, I didn't see much on there that specifically helped, other than that not many people got interview invites! Yikes! But that doesn't necessarily mean anything, so I guess I'll just have to be patient until it's my turn to apply next year 🙂 Thank you!

If I were you I would just focus on my classes as of now because people usually dont decide their list of medical schools they are applying to until they get their MCAT and cum grades from usually at least junior year. Especially to a school like Harvard because you can graduate with a 4.0 but if you get a 31 or 32 on the MCAT then your not that competitive for a med school of that caliber.

That is good advice! Thanks! The only difference with my situation is that I am applying to a program this upcoming summer -- it's an early acceptance program geared towards college sophomores 🙂 Normally I wouldn't be narrowing down my choices this early, but this is a special circumstance! If I end up not getting into this Mt. Sinai program, however, then I will definitely heed your advice and start planning out my school list once I take the MCAT. Thank you!

Catalystik -- Oh, right. Sorry for misunderstanding you! I appreciate your help and advice; I will do that! Thank you!!

Hi! Im also a freshman, from the east coast, hoping to apply to Sinai. Perhaps we might meet around this time next year! It sounds terribly competitive though. Sigh.
Are you taking any sciences this year?

Nice to meet you!! That would be awesome 🙂 It is scarily competitive though!!! What are you majoring in?

Yes, I have started my sciences. I'll have one year of chem and one semester of biology by the time I apply this summer. I'm also doing cancer lab research this summer, so I don't know if that will hurt or help me... We'll see! 🙂 Have you started science?
